Disability Insurance Medical Underwriting Specialist

The Disability Insurance Underwriting Medical Specialist is a crucial partner in the Disability Insurance Underwriting department, reporting to the Manager of Underwriting Policy and Support. This role is essential for maintaining underwriting guidelines and entails reviewing complex applicants' health risk characteristics to assist with underwriting recommendations. Combining clinical insight, analytical skills, and effective communication is key for success in this position. We seek a medical professional capable of understanding various health conditions and personal traits, and how these factors affect disability probability.Your responsibilities include:Conducting medical reviews of current underwriting cases. Examining previous underwriting and claims files to support ongoing research related to IDI underwriting policies. Authoring and updating medical guidelines to enhance underwriting practices. Staying informed on current medical best practices through literature review. Contributing to the continuous improvement of underwriting guidelines. Collaborating with underwriting leadership, claims, legal/compliance, and data teams cross-functionally. Your qualifications include:A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Over 5 years of clinical experience in high-acuity settings such as cardiac care, ER/ICU, or case management. Strong ability to interpret common cardiac testing, including EKGs. Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). A business-oriented mindset with familiarity in statistics, as well as prior insurance or disability experience is advantageous. Required skills and competencies:Clinical synthesis for IDI: Extensive training and experience in various medical conditions, including the ability to recognize symptoms, knowledge of common medications, and understanding of treatments and durations for a range of diseases. Risk Decision Making: A clear understanding of risk management and morbidity risk is crucial, enabling informed decisions on policy offerings based on an applicant's medical history. Effective Communication: The ability to provide clear, actionable medical answers to underwriters daily. Operational Prioritization: Efficient management of medical underwriting queues with adherence to turnaround times. Collaboration and Professionalism: Building effective partnerships with Underwriting, Claims, and Legal/Compliance teams. Location: This is a remote position.Salary Range:$73,280.00 - $120,395.00. This range is a good faith estimate of base pay for this position. The ultimate salary will be determined based on the candidate's education, experience, knowledge, and abilities.
