Safety Manager
Overview
Position Summary: The Traveling Site Safety Manager is responsible for supporting project site crews and Safety Specialists by visiting project sites, assessing unsafe work conditions, and working with project managers, site supervision, and safety personnel to minimize risks and hazards to protect employees, subcontractors, and the customer.
Location & Travel Details
Travel across the United States helping to build renewable projects. This is a fully traveling position (up to 100%) where you will be onsite at project locations. You may be placed on a project site in any state. Average tenure on a project is 8–12 months. Daily per diem, base pay, a company vehicle, and a fuel card are provided.
Responsibilities
Preview projects and sites before work begins to determine safety and environmental risks.
Develop site-specific safety plans, EAPs (Emergency Action Plans), and training for project sites.
Visit active sites to assess ongoing conditions and ensure compliance with safety plans and regulations.
Document unsafe work conditions, safety hazards, and health hazards.
Collaborate with project management, site supervision, and craft workers to implement solutions to safety findings.
Determine corrective or preventative measures and follow up to ensure they are implemented.
Manage contractors' safety programs and training, recommending changes when needed.
Audit orientation and annual safety training records for compliance.
Investigate accidents and injuries through interviews, equipment inspections, and site reviews.
Recommend appropriate disciplinary action when safe practices are violated by employees or subcontractors.
Provide updates to the Project Manager and Director of Safety regularly.
Ensure all records and reports are up-to-date, accurate, and submitted to comply with regulations.
Confirm project sites have appropriate safety equipment.
Manage Safety Specialists at assigned project sites.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Safety.
Qualifications
5–7 years of construction safety managerial experience or equivalent training/experience.
Experience or training in excavation, trenching, and soil mechanics preferred.
Knowledge of OSHA and EPA rules, regulations, and reporting processes for construction safety.
Professional representation of the company to external organizations and regulatory bodies.
Effective communication and training skills.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations.
Business judgment and common sense in recommendations and decisions.
Multi-tasking ability in a fast-paced environment.
Meeting deadlines in short timeframes.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all company levels.
Problem-solving skills for complex, variable situations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and manage the work of Safety Specialists.
Guide team members and monitor performance, discipline, and attendance.
Responsible for the professional development of Safety Specialists.
Communicate and act with a team-oriented mentality.
Ensure positive morale and engagement of employees.
Align with company vision and values.
Assist with employee recruitment, performance management, promotion, retention, and termination.
Work Environment
Frequent work outdoors subject to hot and cold temperatures and wet/humid conditions.
Regular work near moving mechanical parts.
Work in precarious places.
Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
Noise level can be loud.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid state-issued Driver's License with a driving record meeting company risk-management guidelines.
CSP, GSP, CHST, or STSC preferred.
OSHA 500 preferred.
BA in Safety preferred.
Travel
This position may require travel to job sites up to 80% of the time, with daily reporting from a single site located anywhere in the USA.
Educational Requirements
Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Bachelor's Degree in Safety or a related discipline preferred.
