Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Assists the teacher(s) and other school staff in achieving the goals and objectives identified for all students, specifically students served through the special education programs and to maintain appropriate classroom activities, support services, and a safe environment for all students.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning material or skills initially introduced by the teacher(s).
Assists the teacher(s) in devising strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, the IEP, and abilities.
Provides support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
Learns and implements a variety of behavior plans for students.
Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
Assists all students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.
Prepares educational materials as needed.
Assists teacher(s) with parent contact, as requested, to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
Assists teachers with maintaining student records.
Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher(s).
Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as defined by the teachers(s).
Assists with the supervision of students as assigned by the teacher(s).
Assists with wash-up and toileting routines, wheelchair use, lifting, student transfers, and any activities of daily living necessary.
Alerts the teacher(s) to any appropriate information that relates to the students.
Serves as a resource of educational information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher(s).
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
Completes Medicaid billing for eligible services as assigned.
Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
Performs all other duties as assigned by the teacher(s) and/or administration.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Capable on a continuous basis: standing, sitting, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, twisting, repetitive movement of both hands seeing with both near and far visual acuity.
2. Capable on a frequent basis: walking and moving, climb stairs, lifting from floor to waist (up to #50), lifting from waist to shoulders (up to #25).
3. Capable on an occasional basis: pushing, pulling, and lifting from shoulders to overhead (up to #25).
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Special Education Program Aide license through the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) before start date.
Employees hired in this category after January 8, 2002, must have at least two years of higher education; have an associate’s or higher degree; or pass a rigorous academic assessment as mandated by Every Student Succeeds Act.
