Senior Accountant
San Mateo, CA | Hybrid (3 Days In-Office)
Hybrid schedule begins after approximately 6 months to allow time to fully understand the structure, entities, and workflows.
About the Company
This opportunity is with a privately held, family-owned investment platform with a long-standing, stable portfolio and a reputation for integrity, discretion, and thoughtful stewardship.
The role supports family office investment entities only and does not include property-level accounting for operating businesses. The environment is lean, relationship-driven, and focused on long-term stewardship. This position reports directly to senior leadership and works closely with decision-makers who have decades of experience overseeing complex investment portfolios.
The Opportunity
This is a rare chance to join a small, sophisticated family office where accounting fundamentals, sound judgment, and clear communication are highly valued.
The Senior Accountant will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records for family investments while partnering closely with senior leadership. This position is ideal for a strong Senior Accountant who values ownership, mentorship, and long-term continuity over rapid title changes or high-volume transactional work.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain complete and accurate accounting records for family office investment entities in accordance with GAAP and internal policies
Prepare and post monthly journal entries, including accruals, allocations, and intercompany activity
Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including detailed balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
Manage treasury and cash management activities, including:
Daily cash positioning and bank reconciliations
Weekly preparation of “Status of Funds” reports across all bank accounts
Tracking upcoming U.S. Treasury Bill maturities for timely rollovers
Monitoring draws, repayments, and obligations under lines of credit
Track, reconcile, and document intercompany transactions, including interest on related-party loans, to ensure proper recording and timely settlement
Account for investment activity such as capital contributions, distributions, and related reporting
Prepare internal financial statements and management reports for corporations and partnerships for senior leadership review
Coordinate with external advisors (tax preparers, auditors, banks) and provide accurate, timely supporting documentation, including preparation of estimated income summaries for family members and family trusts to support quarterly tax payment calculations
Assist with maintaining strong internal controls, accounting policies, and process documentation
Support ad hoc financial analysis and special projects in a confidential, high-trust family office environment
Ideal Candidate Profile
Strong foundation in accounting fundamentals (general ledger, reconciliations, journal entries, close process)
Experience in a family office, investment firm, or small, high-accountability environment strongly preferred
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly and professionally
Highly detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable working in a lean team setting
Values stability, discretion, and trust, and thrives in long-term environments
