Reporting to the VP of Legal, this position will work with departments across Alarm.com and its portfolio companies to provide advice on a wide range of legal matters, including commercial contracts and transactions, privacy, cybersecurity, compliance, regulatory issues, and general corporate matters. The legal team supports all aspects of the company’s business operations, including commercial relationships, intellectual property, employment, litigation, securities, financial reporting, and strategic activities. The ideal candidate will be business-minded, have a deep sense of curiosity, and be enthusiastic about learning new things and contributing to the growth of the department and the company as a whole.
Responsibilities
Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of agreements, including software, technology, services, vendor, reseller, manufacturer, licensing, and other commercial contracts.
Advising and providing guidance on legal issues relating to commercial terms, compliance, privacy, security, and regulatory matters.
Working closely with executive, sales, IT, product, marketing, finance, and other business teams to provide general legal advice and support and to assist in scaling legal and business processes.
Developing and driving compliance policies and procedures designed to enhance regulatory and business standards compliance and support the company’s business and strategic objectives.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
J.D. from a leading law school.
5+ years of relevant experience in an in-house or large law firm environment, with start-up, software, or technology industry experience highly desirable.
Significant experience independently negotiating, drafting, and reviewing a broad range of commercial contracts and familiarity with a wide range of legal matters including corporate, commercial, privacy, litigation, IP, regulatory, and compliance issues; demonstrated ability and interest in becoming a corporate generalist.
Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple matters with competing priorities, meet deadlines, stay organized, problem-solve, and adapt to change within a growing company while maintaining an excellent bedside manner.
Superior interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate with empathy, professionalism, and clarity, and to build strong, trust-based relationships with internal stakeholders and clients.
Excellent judgment and proven ability to work independently while proactively seeking guidance or input as appropriate.
Proven organizational, analytical, and negotiation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Highly skilled in standard office software and able to adapt quickly to new technologies.
Membership in, or eligibility for admission to, the Virginia Bar (including Corporate Counsel admission).
