Indirect Tax Manager
Indirect Tax Manager (ATL, GA)Position OverviewOptomi, in partnership with a leading software company, is seeking an experienced Indirect Tax Manager to support a high-volume, U.S.-focused sales and use tax function within a fast-paced, technology-driven environment. This role is primarily responsible for managing and defending multiple concurrent state and local tax audits, supporting indirect tax compliance processes, and partnering cross-functionally to support business initiatives and product taxability decisions. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical tax expertise, data comfort, and the ability to operate independently in a complex and evolving environment.Key Responsibilities:Audit Defense (Primary Focus)Manage and own approximately 10–12 concurrent state and local sales and use tax auditsServe as primary point of contact for state and local tax authoritiesPrepare audit responses, documentation, and supporting analysisChallenge audit findings and defend company tax positionsNegotiate audit outcomes, including assessments, penalties, and adjustmentsIndirect Tax Compliance & SupportSupport indirect tax compliance processes in partnership with third-party providersReview tax filings and supporting data for accuracy and completenessInvestigate and resolve variances and discrepancies in tax reportingTax Research & AdvisoryConduct research on sales and use taxability across jurisdictionsProvide guidance on tax implications for new products, services, and business initiativesSupport tax decision-making in collaboration with finance, legal, IT, and product teamsData & AnalyticsWork with large, complex datasets to support audits and compliance validationPartner with data teams to extract and interpret transactional dataUtilize data tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Power BI or similar) to analyze tax exposure and support audit defenseCross-Functional CollaborationPartner with internal stakeholders including finance, controllership, IT, legal, and product teamsCommunicate tax implications clearly to non-tax audiencesSupport resolution of customer and internal tax-related disputesRequired Qualifications:5+ years of progressive experience in indirect tax (sales and use tax)Strong experience in state and local tax audit defenseExperience managing multiple concurrent auditsFamiliarity with tax technology platforms such as Avalara, Sovos, or OneSourceStrong analytical skills and experience working with large datasetsProficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, SQL, or similar)Excellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environmentPreferred QualificationsExperience in fintech, SaaS, software, or technology-driven environmentsExperience in large, complex, or multi-entity corporate structuresExposure to automated tax engines or tax transformation initiativesProfessional certifications (CPA, CMI, MST, or equivalent) a plus
