Full Stack Engineer
Location: Boston (Somerville), hybrid - flexible 3 days a week in-officeType: Full-time, early technical hireCompensation: Base salary range of $100K - $130K + equityAbout UgraidUpgraid is an early-stage startup developing a highly specialized AI energy model to read a building's internal systems from space. From skyscrapers to data centers, malls, warehouses, and single-family homes, billions would benefit from system upgrades. We run advanced energy simulations and deliver a ready-to-pitch upgrade proposal for every property that could reduce energy costs, improve health, and create more attractive spaces for humans.Buildings are foundational to human societies. They are the world’s largest asset class and consume ~40% of energy globally (and generate the same share of greenhouse gas emissions). They shape the way we live, work, play, and interact. We are hiring a founding Full Stack Engineer who will work across the entire stack. You will be responsible for the end-to-end user experience and the evolution of our analytics platform. We’ve proven our MVP and have paying customers—now we’re scaling to thousands of buildings. Every feature you build directly contributes to bending the curve down on global emissions. What You’ll DoDesign and build the interface where customers explore building data, view energy simulations, and act on upgrade recommendationsConnect and normalize data from diverse sources (satellite imagery, utility records, building permits, economic data) into a unified format our models can useExtend our FastAPI backend to serve new data products and support frontend featuresContribute to the asynchronous job systems that run energy simulations at scale across thousands of buildingsBuildings don't come with clean datasets. You'll figure out how to reconcile mismatched addresses, incomplete utility records, and inconsistent permit data into something usableEnergy simulations produce a lot of numbers. You'll build interfaces that help non-technical users understand what matters and what to do nextWe work directly with our customer to improve our products, and want to ensure we are always developing new features that align with their visionHave a strong sense of ownership and enjoy a collaborative cultureRequirements3 - 5 years of experience working as a full stack engineer developing and deploying web applications using Python and a modern JS framework such as Svelte, React, Vue, or similar1-2 years of experience designing REST APIs and working with relational databases (PostgreSQL or equivalent)1+ year of experience wrangling imperfect data—cleaning, transforming, or integrating datasets from multiple sourcesExperience shipping something end-to-end in a professional environment. We like knowing about personal projects or open-source work tooYou understand how to measure, ship, and iterateSelf-motivation is requiredIntellectual curiosity about the work you doAbility to work in-office 3 days a weekAbility to thrive in a low-ego environmentPreferencesExperience developing and use a variety of ML methodsExperience working in an early-stage startup or strong desire to work in oneExperience building B2B enterprise softwareMore About UpgraidWe are solving hard problems. In today’s world, building upgrades are very archaic — Physical inspections, owners with no understanding of the systems in their buildings, and expensive manual and differing energy audits make the old way of doing things untenable. Our experienced founding team includes a former McKinsey partner and leader of “built environment” sustainability, an experienced product leader, and an MIT building scientist. We have rapidly closed our funding round and have advisors who have built companies from zero to IPO and are leaders in the industry. We are ready to scale.
