Communications Director
Aly Richards is running for Governor to make Vermont a state where everyone can thrive. The campaign is looking for a Communications Director to help lead and implement the campaign's communications strategy. The Communications Director will be responsible for telling the campaign's story clearly, consistently, and compellingly across all channels. This is a senior role on a fast-moving campaign that works closely with the candidate, campaign manager, and senior campaign team to shape the public campaign narrative, build relationships with the Vermont press, and own the campaign's digital media presence from strategy through execution.ResponsibilitiesPress & Media Relations:Serve as the campaign’s primary contact for Vermont and national press.Pitch and place stories, manage interview requests, and prepare the candidate for media appearances.Write and distribute press releases, statements, op-eds, and rapid response materials.Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with reporters, editors, and producers covering the race.Coordinate with and manage media consultants, ensuring their work integrates with overall campaign messaging and strategy.Content & Messaging:Draft speeches, talking points, and briefing materials in the candidate’s voice.Collaborate with the campaign team and consultants to build and maintain consistent messaging across all platforms.Support debate, editorial board, and endorsement preparation.Digital Media:Own the strategy and day to day execution of the campaign’s website and social media presence (Instagram, Facebook, X, Blue Sky, and emerging platforms).Produce or coordinate production of original content, including video, graphics, and copy, that drives engagement and reflects campaign values.Monitor the digital landscape, identify opportunities, and respond to the news cycle in real time.Other duties as assigned by the campaign manager.QualificationsExperience in political communications, journalism, or a closely related field - campaign experience preferred. Experience in website management and graphic design a plus.Strong writing skills across formats, including press materials, digital content, long-form, and rapid response.Ability to develop statewide plans, set measurable goals, and adjust strategy based on data and changing conditions.Understanding of Vermont’s political and community landscape, or the ability to learn it quickly and thoughtfully. Existing relationships with Vermont media are a plus.Ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced and changing environment.Willingness to work campaign hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.Deep alignment with the candidate’s values and genuine enthusiasm for the work.
