Position Title: Special Education Teacher Assistant FLSA Status: Non-ExemptDepartment: Curriculum and Instruction Reports to: PrincipalLocation: District Salary Scale: TA Pay ScalePosition Type: Full-Time Salary Range: $17.66/hr-$20.20/hrDescription of Position: The special education teacher assistant is an educational professional who assists full-time special education teachers with reinforcing the instruction, assisting with classroom activities and providing clerical assistance. This position will involve extra assistance or supervision of students while the special education teacher is out of the classroom. The special education teacher assistant helps monitor and supervise students to ensure a safe and orderly environment within the classroom. This position provides an additional $1,000 per year in compensation.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesProvide Instructional Support (35%)Assist classroom teacher with instructional duties and specialized tasksWork with individuals, small groups, or large groupsProvide programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by teacher/therapistAdapt classroom activities, assignments, and materialsAssist students with electronic communication devices, switches, pointers, feedersPerform clerical tasks (copies, filing)Maintain instructional materialsAdminister tests, homework, make-up workServe as information source for substitute teachersParticipate in development and support of special education programsProvide Student Behavior & Safety Support (30%)Participate in implementing student behavior plansAssist with behavior modification and de-escalation techniquesMonitor students in various environments to maintain safetyMonitor student behavior, time-outs, and in-class detentionsEncourage positive attitudes and self-esteemRespond to emergency situationsRecord and report student concerns promptlyModel appropriate social behaviorMaintain ethical behavior and confidentialityMonitor daily schedules and behavior plansAssist With Personal Care & Mobility (25%)Assist with personal care: toileting, hygiene, diapering, clothing, wash-upAssist with breakfast, lunch, snacks, and clean-upSupport feeding tasks (heating food, grinding food, collecting lunch money)Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipmentAssist with mobility needs: lifting/positioning, wheelchairs, loading/unloading busesEscort students around school and on field tripsCollaboration, Communication & Administrative Duties (10%)Collaborate with teachers, parents, medical professionals, and therapistsMaintain records and filesCommunicate student concerns and help resolve issuesSupport substitute teachersMaintain professional competencePerform other duties as assigned by teacher/administratorMinimum Education & Experience RequirementsPreKAssociate's degree in early childhood orAt least 60 college credit hours and at least 12 early childhood college credit hours orHigh school diploma/GED, meet minimum standard of ACT WorkKeys Silver level certification scores, and at least 12 early childhood college credit hoursK-12High school diploma/GED, and meet minimum standard of ACT WorkKeys Silver level certification scores, and at least 12 early childhood college credit hours orAssociate's degree or higher orAt least 48 college credit hours**All employees hired by the school district must pass a criminal background and child abuse registry check. **Skills, Abilities And KnowledgeAbility to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Ability to maintain confidentiality.Ability to work with teachers and students to demonstrate ways of supporting students in the classroom.Last Revised: 03/24/2026
