Automation EngineerJob Function & OverviewWe are seeking a candidate for our Automation Engineer role. This role combines PLCprogramming and commissioning with field troubleshooting/service support, and includes controlpanel design using AutoCAD Electrical plus HMI programming and application development.The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, able to work independently, and motivated to deliverreliable automation solutions for our clients.Responsibilities• Design, program, test, and commission PLC-based control systems for industrial and municipalprojects.• Modify and update existing PLC programs to support system upgrades, operationalimprovements, and standardization.• Troubleshoot control system and equipment issues on-site and remotely, providing timelyresolutions.• Develop and implement HMI/SCADA interfaces (graphics, alarms, trends, and operatorworkflows) as needed.• Develop supporting applications and tools (reporting/dashboards, integrations withSQL/APIs/historians) as required by the project.• Produce Control Panel drawings using AutoCAD Electrical, including schematics, panellayouts, I/O drawings, wire/cable schedules, and BOMs.• Coordinate with vendors and panel shops to support fabrication, revisions/redlines, FAT/SATreadiness, and as-builts.• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs; diagnose on-site issues and providerecommendations to clients.• Schedule and coordinate service calls; prepare tools, equipment, and materials for service andcommissioning tasks.• Provide technical support during installation, startup, commissioning, and after-hoursemergency on-call duty as required.• Document PLC code, wiring changes, system configurations, maintenance logs, and inspectionrecords; maintain accurate project documentation.• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and field technicians; assist with training endusers and operators on system functionality.Your partner in water and wastewater automationicsautomated.comEducation & Experience• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldPREFERRED.• Minimum 2 years of relevant PLC/industrial automation experience REQUIRED (or equivalentcombination of training and experience).• Experience with Allen-Bradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000), Modicon/Schneider, GE, Siemens, orClick PLCs REQUIRED.• Experience with HMI/SCADA software (VTScada, FactoryTalk View, Citect, iFIX, etc.) is aPLUS.• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical for control panel schematics and layouts is a PLUS.• Field service, equipment troubleshooting, and customer support experience is a PLUS.Licenses & Certifications• Valid Driver’s License required (travel to customer locations and project sites).• Manufacturer or industry certifications (Rockwell, Siemens, ISA, etc.) a PLUS; additional sitespecific certifications may be required.Technical Skills• Proficiency in ladder logic, function block, and structured text programming.• Ability to read electrical drawings and produce/maintain control panel schematics and layoutsin AutoCAD Electrical.• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and project documentation tools.• Working knowledge of water/wastewater treatment processes is a PLUS.Your partner in water and wastewater automationicsautomated.comKey CompetenciesCommunication & Customer Service• Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.• Builds positive client relationships through professionalism and reliability.• Provides support and guidance to field teams during project execution.Problem Solving & Quality Assurance• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across software and field hardware.• Ensures quality, reliability, and safety in all programming, design, and service tasks.• Identifies root causes and implements corrective actions and process improvements.Self-Management & Productivity• Works independently with minimal supervision.• Manages multiple projects, service calls, and priorities effectively.• Adapts to shifting deadlines, travel schedules, and project demands.Initiative & Leadership• Maintains a proactive and solution-focused attitude.• Seeks opportunities for professional growth and skill development.• Takes ownership of assigned projects and deliverables through completion.Physical Demands• Occasionally lift and carry tools and equipment (up to 60 pounds).• Work on-site in industrial environments as needed (stairs, ladders, uneven surfaces, andoutdoor conditions).• Travel to customer locations for commissioning, troubleshooting, and service support.Join our team and use your automation expertise to make a lasting impact on criticalinfrastructure projects.
