Millwright / Maintenance Mechanic Travel Role | Heavy Equipment | Rail & Industrial Operations Summit Skilled Solutions (S3) About the Opportunity Summit Skilled Solutions (S3) is recruiting an experienced Millwright / Maintenance Mechanic for a highly specialized, travel-based role supporting rail and industrial operations across North America. This position is ideal for a mechanically inclined professional who enjoys working in the field, troubleshooting complex equipment, and taking ownership of critical maintenance operations with minimal supervision. This role involves hands-on mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical work on large mobile equipment, as well as shop and yard maintenance when not traveling. What You’ll Be Doing Coordinate and communicate with customer and rail personnel to plan, schedule, and execute field work activities Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on large mechanical systems and mobile rail equipment in the field Maintain and service engines, hydraulic systems, rail saws, conveyors, and portable hydraulic tools in a yard environment Diagnose mechanical and hydraulic issues using schematics, manuals, and technical documentation Fabricate, repair, or modify parts using shop equipment including: Power tools and grinders Forklifts MIG and stick welding equipment Plasma and oxy-acetylene cutting tools Work with outside vendors and contractors to ensure quality and safety standards are met Participate in and support safety initiatives, inspections, and compliance efforts Complete required documentation including daily work reports, travel logs, mileage, and expense reporting Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment at all times Work independently in the field while staying accountable to schedules and deliverables Travel extensively to job sites throughout North America (domestic and occasional international) What We’re Looking For High school diploma or equivalent (technical degree preferred) 3+ years of hands-on experience in: Mechanical systems Hydraulics and pneumatics Basic electrical systems Reading and interpreting schematics and manuals Welding experience (MIG and/or stick preferred) Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision Strong verbal, written, and computer communication skills Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office applications Valid driver’s license Valid U.S. passport (or ability to obtain) Ability to complete required rail safety certifications (e.g., eRailSafe, Roadway Worker Protection) Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs as required Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, and work in physically demanding environments for extended periods Work may involve: Moving mechanical parts Electrical hazards Working at moderate heights Outdoor exposure in all weather conditions Noise, fumes, airborne particles, and industrial chemicals Work locations vary between customer job sites and yard/shop environments Travel & Schedule Expectations Extensive travel throughout North America required (weekly) Ability to mobilize on short notice by air or ground Some assignments may last 2–3 weeks before return home Overtime, weekend, and holiday work may be required based on workload Core Competencies Safety-first mindset Strong work ethic and accountability Attention to detail and time management Team collaboration and communication Adaptability and flexibility Customer focus and professionalism Commitment to continuous improvement Why Work with S3 At Summit Skilled Solutions, we put people first.
