Foundational Epidemiologist
Summary
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) has retained Knowledge Services to provide a Foundational Epidemiologist to support The Cancer Registry Program. The purpose of this classification is to serve as an entry-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities.
Responsibilities
· Support the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of surveillance and prevention efforts.
· Perform analyses by using statistical techniques commonly employed in epidemiologic evaluations to investigate and analyze observed outbreaks.
· Use databases for analysis of health problems.
· Use surveillance systems to collect disease or health outcome data.
· Generate descriptive analyses of surveillance data for a variety of audiences.
· Identify surveillance data needs, implement new or revise existing surveillance systems, reports key findings from the surveillance system, and support evaluation of surveillance systems.
· Provide scientific advice and technical assistance to various public, private, and nonprofit health and health-related state and local agencies and organizations.
· Assist in developing recommended evidence-based interventions and control measures in response to epidemiologic findings with appropriate cultural/social/political framework
· Assure data quality.
· Prepare written and oral reports and presentations that communicate necessary information to agency staff and the public.
· Collaborate with community partners and clinical staff to support epidemiologic investigations.
· Apply principles of good ethical/legal practice as they relate to study design and data collection, dissemination, and use.
· Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Basic knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable and other conditions of public health importance.
· Basic knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations
· Working knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, data quality assurance, and data management techniques
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Strong customer service skills
· Some knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease
· Working knowledge of statistical software packages. (MS Excel/Access, SAS, SPSS, R, etc.)
· Working knowledge of ArcGIS preferred
Education and Experience:
· A Master’s degree in public health (MPH) or a Master of Science degree in public health
(MSPH) with a focus on epidemiology or analysis and assessment or
· Bachelor’s in epidemiology with ≥ 2 years of experience
· Experience in the use of video/web conferencing tools (such as MS Teams) and Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Outlook)
· Experience working with statistical software packages.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience working in Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, PowerBI.
· Experience working with ArcGIS or other geospatial packages.
· Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
· Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and present statistical data.
· Experience with data collection, analysis, and production of reports
· Some experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area
· Experience with database management systems, especially those used to manage population-based disease data.
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $38.69 - $39.91 per hour
