Mechanical Design Engineer

Role OverviewThis position is responsible for conceptualizing, engineering, and delivering custom mechanical systems and tooling that support manufacturing operations. The role blends hands-on design work with project ownership, supplier coordination, and on-site support to ensure equipment is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.Core DutiesEngineer custom mechanical solutions and production tooling aligned with customer requirements, operational needs, and commercial constraintsDevelop fabrication-ready design packages using 2D and 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred), ensuring compliance with applicable standards and best practicesIntegrate safety, usability, reliability, and efficiency into all designs, with attention to cycle time, ergonomics, serviceability, and long-term durabilityIdentify, specify, and source mechanical components and assemblies; define build scopes, initiate purchasing activities, and monitor material flowGenerate detailed cost proposals for new and revised equipment, including pricing, timelines, labor estimates, throughput assumptions, and material utilizationCoordinate with outside engineering firms, integrators, or fabricators when specialized capabilities or capacity are requiredProvide technical oversight during build, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and refurbishment activitiesCreate and maintain technical documentation such as operating instructions, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance standardsSupport production and maintenance teams by delivering equipment training and contributing to standardized work and training documentationRequired BackgroundBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field preferred; substantial hands-on industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal educationMinimum of 5 years' experience designing mechanical equipment, tooling, or automation in a manufacturing or industrial settingStrong working knowledge of CAD-based mechanical design (SolidWorks strongly desired)Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and adapt to shifting prioritiesPractical experience applying DFMEA and PFMEA principles in equipment or process designTechnical Knowledge BaseMechanical system and machine design fundamentalsMaterial behavior, stress analysis, and load calculationsStatics, motion analysis, and mechanical dynamicsPneumatic and hydraulic systems, including basic fluid mechanicsMetals, heat treatment processes, surface finishes, and protective coatingsDimensional tolerancing, fits, and finishing requirements
