We are seeking a Senior Transportation Planner with experience in transportation planning to support and help lead active transportation, trail, and multimodal projects across Utah and the Intermountain West.This role is ideal for a planner who enjoys both technical and planning-level work, and who is passionate about improving mobility, connectivity, and quality of life through trails, shared-use paths, and complete streets.What are the core responsibilities for the role?Lead and support the planning and development of active transportation facilities, including shared-use paths, trails, bike lanes, and complete streetsManage corridor studies, concept studies, active transportation plans, feasibility studies, and NEPA/PEL-related planning effortsPrepare and review technical memoranda, reports, and planning documents for transportation and trail projectsLead and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including traffic, drainage, roadway, structures, utilities, and right-of-wayLead project management activities, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality controlAnalyze transportation, land use, and mobility data to inform planning recommendationsAssist with and play a key role in public and stakeholder engagement efforts, including meetings, workshops, and presentationsCommunicate technical information clearly through strong written deliverables and verbal presentationsMentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative team environmentLead business development and client relationship efforts as appropriateQualifications, Skills, and Competencies: Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field (required)15+ years of experience in transportation planning and/or multimodal project developmentExperience managing active transportation, trails, or multimodal projectsStrong understanding of current national and local guidelines, particularly for bicycle and pedestrian facilitiesProficiency in GIS and/or transportation planning and analysis toolsExperience preparing and reviewing technical reports, studies, and planning documentationStrong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to clients, stakeholders, and public audiencesAbility to work across multiple phases of planning projectsSelf-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detailAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a team environmentPreferred QualificationsExperience working directly with UDOT or on UDOT-funded projectsExperience with trail planning and design, including alignment development and user experience considerationsBackground in corridor planning, active transportation plans, or multimodal network developmentExperience working with state DOTs, MPOs, and/or local agenciesInterest in innovative mobility solutions and emerging best practices in active transportationExperience supporting public involvement and stakeholder coordinationExperience mentoring junior staffWhy would a candidate want this job?
