Job Description
Naval Nuclear Laboratory has internship opportunities for college students to spend the summer of 2027 getting great work experience, in great locations, supporting the world's greatest Navy.
Calling all students pursuing an Occupational Safety & Health and/or Industrial Hygiene degree! NNL Summer Technical Internships offer you immersive professional experience in the field of Occupational Safety & Health and Industrial Hygiene. This candidate would gain the invaluable opportunity to work with a team of experienced and accomplished occupational safety & health and industrial hygiene professionals to assist with projects in support of the technological development of Bettis Safety Training's safety training curricula. At NNL you are a part of a team working on deliverables that have a direct impact on the Navy's nuclear fleet.
The projects range from:
The candidate would gain experience in observation & evaluation, co-instructing and potentially delivering in-person safety and industrial hygiene training under instruction of a qualified safety training instructor in adult learning environments. Developing/updating computer-based training products and in-person training presentations
Implement more efficient management and analysis of the student feedback data to be used to improve the effectiveness of the safety training we deliver
Further develop the Back-Up Instructor Playbook for all Safety Training In-Person training products

The NNL Internship is a 10-12 week program starting in May/June 2027.
An internship position may result in a return internship or full-time employment offer upon successful completion of the program. Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Candidates for Instructional Designer internship positions must be:
Pursuing a BS, MS or PhD in Occupational Safety & Health and/or Industrial Hygiene degree from an accredited college or university
Must have completed at least first full year of college by May 2027
Enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout this internship

Cumulative minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
Prior related internship, co-op or work experience (paid or volunteer)
Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience

Pay Range
$25.00/hour-$42.50/hour Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Hourly salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
All candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707.
