Job TypeFull-time, InternshipDescriptionMore and more we see municipalities rely on accurate GIS data to manage assets like sidewalks, roadways, and stormwater infrastructure. Supporting these inventories through field data collection, spatial analysis, and mapping is a growing service at BETA Group, Inc. We are seeking a GIS Intern to support municipal transportation projects by assisting with data collection, GIS data development, and map production. This is a hands-on opportunity to work alongside engineers, planners, and scientists, gain real-world GIS experience, and build valuable skills through cross-training and mentorship.Responsibilities:Create eye-catching maps, graphics, and visualizations used in real client projectsAnalyze spatial data to support transportation, environmental, water, and land development projectsAssist with building and maintaining GIS databases and web mapsSupport field data collection and integrate data into GIS platformsPerform geoprocessing and basic spatial analysisCollaborate with multidisciplinary teams and learn how GIS fits into the full project lifecycleLearn new skills and contribute to project tasks and activitiesAsk lots of questions!Preferred location is BETA’s Hartford, CT office. Candidates should have flexibility to work from our other office locations.Growth Opportunities:BETA encourages and promotes employee advancement and career developmentLeads to potential advancement to more senior technical positions and project managementRequirementsRequired Experience/Skills :Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or a related fieldUnderstanding of general engineering theory and conceptsProficient in the use of current technology (i.e., tablets, smart phones, laptops, etc.)Proficient with Microsoft Office SuiteStrong technical aptitude with an eagerness to learnExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong problem-solving skills with attention to detailMust be able to collect field data and measurements including but not limited to roadway, sidewalk, and utility assets; and perform asset inspectionsMust be able to lift/move objects weighing up to 40 poundsMust be able to perform field work in both hot and cold weather (rain and/or snow)Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of timeMust have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportationPreferred Experience/Skills:ESRI (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online, etc.)General working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or other CAD platformOSHA 10 CertificationAbout BETA:BETA Group, Inc. is a New England based consultant engineering firm and leader in the fields of transportation, traffic, structural, civil/site, and water/wastewater engineering; landscape architecture; urban design and planning; GIS/asset management; environmental sciences and permitting; and construction services.BETA is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
