Tool Design Engineer | Chicago, IL
This role is for a hands-on Tool Design Engineer - this position offers a chance to make a direct impact on quality, throughput, and cost. You'll design and improve tools, dies, fixtures, and gauges that keep production moving-working closely with engineers, toolmakers, and operations teams from concept through launch. DescriptionDesign tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, molds, and gauges using 2D/3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).Create detailed drawings and models with part geometry, tolerances, GD&T, and material specs to support accurate builds and repeatable performance.Partner cross‑functionally with engineering, toolroom, quality, and production to develop tooling for new products and continuous improvement.Review designs for manufacturability, durability, safety, and cost, recommending smart tradeoffs where needed.Own tooling projects end‑to‑end: scope, schedules, revisions, and basic cost tracking.Maintain drawing packages and documentation as designs evolve; ensure clean revision control.Select appropriate materials and standard components for tooling applications.Troubleshoot tooling performance issues and drive design improvements to eliminate downtime and defects.Ensure designs comply with applicable safety and regulatory expectations. ProfileAssociate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Tool Design, or related field (or equivalent experience).3-5 years of tool design experience in a manufacturing environment.Strong proficiency in CAD and creating production‑ready drawing packages.Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance stack thinking.Solid manufacturing process knowledge-stamping, forming, die‑casting (preferred).Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.Experience with metal forming, progressive dies, and/or injection molds.Familiarity with toolroom build/tryout cycles and supporting tools through launch and optimization.
