This work helps municipalities make smarter, data-driven decisions to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of their communities.As a GIS Field Technician, you’ll be an essential part of our team, supporting the collection, development, and analysis of spatial data for municipal transportation projects. This hands-on role offers the chance to work alongside engineers, planners, and scientists, gaining real-world GIS experience while developing skills through mentorship and cross-training opportunities.Responsibilities:Assist with the collection of field data and perform asset inspectionsPerform field measurements including but not limited to roadway, sidewalks, curb ramps, and other municipal infrastructure within the Right of WayTake ownership of daily field operations, including planning, coordinating, and executing data collection to meet project goalsEdit and validate the collected data under the guidance of the project managerHelp build and maintain geographic databases, tables, forms, and reports that bring municipal data to lifeCollaborate closely with engineers, planners, and other staff to ensure project deliverables meet high-quality standardsUse cutting-edge technology like tablets, GPS devices, and GIS software to capture, manage, and analyze data efficientlyPreferred location is BETA’s Hartford, CT office. Candidates should have flexibility to work from our other office locations. BETA also offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing employees to request working remotely up to 2 days per week.RequirementsRequired Experience/Skills:Bachelor’s degree program in GIS, Geography, Geology, Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field1 to 3 years of related GIS experienceGIS principles, concepts, and applicationsProficient in the use of current technology (i.e., tablets, smart phones, laptops, etc.)Proficient with Microsoft Office SuiteStrong technical aptitude with an eagerness to learnExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong problem-solving skills with high attention to detailMust be able to collect field data and measurements including but not limited to roadway, sidewalk, and utility assets; and perform asset inspectionsMust be able to lift/move objects weighing up to 40 poundsMust be able to perform field work in both hot and cold weather (rain and/or snow)Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of timeMust have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportationPreferred Experience/Skills:ESRI Suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online, etc.) to create and publish map servicesWorking knowledge of GPS equipmentAutoCADAbout BETA:BETA Group, Inc. is a New England based consultant engineering firm and leader in the fields of transportation, traffic, structural, civil/site, and water/wastewater engineering; landscape architecture; urban design and planning; GIS/asset management; environmental sciences and permitting; and construction services.
