CRAVEN COUNTY SCHOOLSTransportation Mechanic IIIJob DescriptionPosition Title: Transportation Mechanic IIIReports To: Director of TransportationTerm of Employment: 12 MonthsFLSA Status: NonexemptSalary Grade: 67NATURE OF WORKAn employee in this class performs complex and specialized duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Work is performed based on prior experience and by reference to technical manuals for difficult tasks, and the employee may be required to know one specialized system. Most complex and highly technical problems are resolved. Errors are expected to be resolved by the employee. The employee receives general direction, functions independently, and completed work is occasionally reviewed.Under limited supervision, performs supervisory and journeyman work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment of the School System Transportation Department. Work involves identifying, diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment; responding to roadside breakdowns, accidents or other emergencies; and testing equipment for compliance with safety standards. Employee is also responsible for performing minor engine and sub-assembly checks, repairs and replacements; checking lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper function; and for performing N.C. Board of Education School Bus Preventive Maintenance checks and repair and N.C. Motor Vehicle Inspections on motor vehicles. Reports to the Vehicle Maintenance Route Coordinator.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEA high school diploma or higher is required.Prior transportation experience of more than 5 years preferredSafety Inspection Certification issued by the State of North CarolinaNC School Bus Inspection CertificationILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLESDiagnoses complex mechanical problems.Operates specialized power equipment to recondition motor assemblies.Conducts complete engine tune up using computerized equipment.Repairs and replaces brake drums.Straightens damaged frames, repairs and replaces differentials, drive shafts, front end and steering mechanisms.Repairs electrical systems to insure proper functioning.Repairs, adjusts or replaces starters, generators, transmissions and clutch assemblies.Performs North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles required inspection of buses and other school owned vehicles.Assists and provides instruction to lower level mechanics.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESConsiderable knowledge of school bus and vehicles operation and maintenance.Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines and other mechanical components of school buses and service vehicles.Considerable knowledge of the tools and equipment used in automotive repair shops.Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment.Ability to determine appropriate methods to repair improperly operating automotive equipment.Ability to comprehend and apply North Carolina Inspection Law.Skill to physically perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance and vehicle body repair.Ability to read and comprehend technical materials.SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCESufficient education and experience to demonstrate possession of the needed knowledge and abilities.Appropriate North Carolina driver's license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board and local policy on evaluation of personnel.DisclaimerThe preceding job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
