Job Title: Telecommunicator - Part TimeDepartment: SheriffPay Grade: 64FLSA Status: Non-ExemptJOB SUMMARYThe purpose of the class is to dispatch emergency service personnel in response to calls for assistance from both emergency and non-emergency phone lines. Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Communications Center and assist the Communications Center Director in the shift level supervision of personnel.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Possess a strong, positive, professional attitude in all interactions with HCSO personnel/staff and all other surrounding agencies with good customer service skills being demonstrated in a collaborative spiritResponsible for answering emergency service phone lines and dispatching the appropriate responding agency, (i.e. fire/rescue, EMS, or law enforcement.)Maintain an orderly, professional, and efficient work environment.Manage the day-to-day functions of the Communications Center under the guidance of the Communications Director.Supervise on-duty shift personnel within the division.Serve as Communications on-call administrator.Securing and maintaining adequate staffing levels of positions in the event of absent/off-duty personnel.Ensure effective and professional communication by on-duty telecommunicators among colleagues and citizens alike.Maintain current/up to-date skill sets necessary (i.e. phones, communication equipment, job relevant software(s), etc.Monitor computer and phone issues and troubleshoot problems affecting the Communications Center.Coordinate with other agencies for adequate/appropriate responses to natural and/or manmade disasters.Assist in training of new and current division/agency personnel.Answer calls for service from the general public and emergency service personnel and other officials.Answer telephones and provide appropriate and coordinated responses to calls for service.Maintain emergency reference materials/maintenance logs relative to the service of the equipment.Work independently and exercise mental agility and sound judgment in life-and-death situations.Participate in and maintain specialized skills training applicable to the position.Maintain a flexible work schedule primarily normal business hours.Performs other assigned duties.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:High school diploma or equivalent;Three (3) months of directly related experience;Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; andMust be at least twenty-one years of age to drive a County vehicle.Valid state driver's license. Must have no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV records in order to operate county vehicles.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of county ordinances, policies, and procedures;Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing;Skill in the use of computers and applicable software programs; andAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Requires sedentary work that involves sitting or standing virtually all of the time and may involve exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally to move objects, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving repetitive motions and the use of standard office equipment.The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth and texture perception, and color perception.WORK ENVIRONMENT:Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.
