This senior practitioner will be responsible for designing and building ontologies that translate insurance finance KPIs and business knowledge into formal, machine-interpretable semantic models using OWL 2 / RDF standards. This role acts as a critical bridge between domain expertise and technical ontology development, ensuring accurate, scalable, and reusable semantic data models aligned with enterprise standards.Additional Information*The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Bermingham, Alabama is $110k - $125k/year & benefits (see belowKey ResponsibilitiesLead the design and development of ontologies that reflect insurance finance business concepts, KPIs, and reporting hierarchies.Translate business glossaries, KPI definitions, and reporting structures into formal ontology constructs including classes, properties, restrictions, and individuals.Collaborate closely with business stakeholders to ensure ontology aligns with organizational data governance, reporting, and analytics needs.Demonstrate expertise in conceptual, logical, and physical data model design tailored to financial services and insurance domains.Use ontology authoring tools (Protégé, WebProtégé, Metaphactory, TopBraid) to create, edit, and maintain enterprise semantic data models and knowledge graphs.Contribute to or build ontologies aligned with industry standards such as FIBO or ACCORD, ensuring interoperability and enterprise integration.Apply proficiency in OWL 2 / RDF standards to ensure models adhere to semantic web best practices.Develop, optimize, and validate complex SPARQL queries to extract, analyze, and validate graph data integrity.Document end-to-end data lineage from source systems to BI reports, ensuring transparency and traceability.Work with data governance tools such as Microsoft Purview, Fabric Data Catalog, or equivalents to enforce data quality and stewardship.Understand and implement Critical Data Elements (CDEs), data quality rules, and stewardship frameworks.Required Skills & QualificationsMinimum of 5+ years working within insurance or reinsurance domains, with a solid understanding of industry concepts, KPIs, and reporting structures.Proven experience designing conceptual, logical, and physical data models in financial or insurance settings.Hands-on experience with ontology authoring tools such as Protégé, WebProtégé, Metaphactory, or TopBraid.Strong knowledge of semantic standards and experience building or extending enterprise semantic data models, knowledge graphs, or FIBO/ACCORD ontologies.Ability to translate business glossaries and KPI definitions into formal ontology language (classes, properties, restrictions).Knowledge of SPARQL for querying, validating, and analyzing graph data.Experience documenting data lineage from source systems to reporting layers.Familiarity with data governance tools like Microsoft Purview, Fabric Data Governance, or similar platforms.Understanding of Critical Data Elements, data quality rules, and stewardship models.Additional Skills & AttributesStrong analytical and conceptual thinking with an attention to detail.Excellent communication skills to collaborate with both technical teams and business stakeholders.Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.Preferred QualificationsHands-on experience with enterprise knowledge graphs and semantic data modeling in large-scale environments.Familiarity with industry standards (FIBO, ACCORD), and emerging semantic web technologies.Exposure to data cataloging, data quality frameworks, and end-to-end data lineage processes.We offer:A highly competitive compensation and benefits package.A multinational organization with 60 offices in 20 countries and the possibility to work abroad.10 days of paid annual leave (plus sick leave and national holidays).Maternity & paternity leave plans.A comprehensive insurance plan including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-/short-term disability (plans vary by region).Retirement savings plans.A higher education certification policy.Commuter benefits (varies by region).Extensive training opportunities, focused on skills, substantive knowledge, and personal development.On-demand Udemy for Business for all Synechron employees with free access to more than 5000 curated courses.Coaching opportunities with experienced colleagues from our Financial Innovation Labs (FinLabs) and Center of Excellences (CoE) groups.Cutting edge projects at the world’s leading tier-one banks, financial institutions and insurance firms.A flat and approachable organization.A truly diverse, fun-loving, and global work culture.S YNECHRON’S DIVERSITY & INCLUSION STATEMENTDiversity & Inclusion are fundamental to our culture, and Synechron is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer.
