About BLACK COPPERBLACK COPPER is a multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to amplifying diverse voices in the global art landscape. Through our biannual magazine, exhibitions, publishing initiatives, and community programming, we celebrate the stories and contributions of artists and creatives of African, Caribbean, Latin American, Indigenous, First Nations, Intercultural, and MENA heritage.As BLACK COPPER expands its publishing initiatives, we are developing a platform that supports artists, writers, and cultural practitioners through editorial storytelling, independent publications, and special print projects.Role OverviewThe Publishing Intern supports the editorial and production process of BLACK COPPER’s biannual magazine and growing publishing initiatives. This role focuses on coordinating artists, organizing assets, assisting with editorial workflows, and supporting special publishing projects including the Rare Books Initiative.The intern will also assist in researching and compiling potential publishing clients, collaborators, and institutional opportunities aligned with BLACK COPPER’s mission and publishing vision.This is an ideal role for someone interested in publishing, editorial work, independent media, cultural storytelling, and gaining hands-on experience within a growing arts organization.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist with artist outreach, communication, and file collection for each magazine issue and publishing projectTrack publishing timelines, assets, and deliverables to ensure deadlines are metSupport coordination between editorial, design, and contributing artistsAssist with organizing and reviewing submissions for magazine and publishing projectsSupport editorial content development, including drafting artist summaries, captions, metadata, and supporting materialsAssist in maintaining consistency with BLACK COPPER’s visual and editorial standardsSupport publishing-related research including printers, distributors, publishing references, and archival materials as assignedAssist with the Rare Books Initiative and special publishing projects including monographs, reprints, and independent releasesResearch and compile lists of potential publishing clients, collaborators, institutions, writers, and artists aligned with BLACK COPPER’s publishing initiativesHelp organize publishing files, production assets, and internal documentation across Drive, Notion, and Monday.comQualificationsStrong interest in art, publishing, editorial work, and cultural equityExcellent organizational and communication skillsAbility to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlinesStrong attention to detail and interest in editorial workflowsFamiliarity with editorial, publishing, or production processes is a plusProficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is a plus but not requiredFamiliarity with Notion, Google Workspace, or Monday.com is a plusFamiliarity with BIPOC art and cultural history is preferredBenefitsAcademic creditMentorship and networking opportunities with artists, publishers, and cultural professionalsHands-on experience within an independent arts and publishing organizationFirst consideration for future opportunities as BLACK COPPER growsOpportunity to contribute to the development of a growing publishing and cultural platform
