Job Title: On-Call Monitor Location: San Diego, CA (Field-Based)Job Type: Part-Time / On-CallExperience Level: Mid-Level (1+ years field experience)About the Role We are seeking qualified, detail-oriented On-Call Monitor to support upcoming construction monitoring projects in the San Diego region. This position is ideal for experienced field technicians looking for flexible, on-call project work.As a professional monitor, you will serve as the on-site eyes and ears for environmental compliance, ensuring that earth-moving activities adhere to local, state (CEQA), and federal (NEPA) regulations. A background in Archaeology, Paleontology, or Geology is highly preferred, but candidates with strong general environmental monitoring and field tech experience are encouraged to apply.Professional and Technical RequirementsTo ensure compliance with San Diego County and City environmental mitigation standards, candidates must possess the following qualifications:Education and ExpertiseAcademic Background: B.A./B.S. or higher in Anthropology, Archaeology, Paleontology, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent, hands-on professional field experience will be considered in lieu of a specific degree.Field Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of professional field technician experience (e.g., cultural resource management, paleontological mitigation, or environmental compliance monitoring), with a proven track record of working safely on active construction sites.Regional and Technical Competencies San Diego Field Knowledge: Familiarity with Southern California archaeological assemblages, historical complexes, or local geological formations (e.g., San Diego Formation, Mission Valley Formation).Regulatory Familiarity: Basic understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) resource mitigation requirements.Field Skills: Proficiency in identifying cultural artifacts (lithics, shell, historical debris) and/or paleontological specimens (marine invertebrates, terrestrial vertebrates) in disrupted soils.Technical Literacy: Ability to use GPS units, digital data collection applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Solocator), and take accurate stratigraphic measurements. Physical and Logistical Requirements Field Conditions: Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, and stand for extended periods alongside heavy machinery.Safety & PPE: Strict adherence to OSHA safety protocols. Must possess or be willing to acquire standard PPE (steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest, hard hat, safety glasses).Transportation: Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation to commute to various job sites across San Diego County, and a clean driving record.
