Director of Instrumental Music

SUMMARYThe Director of Instrumental Music is responsible for the overall vision, management, and instruction of the instrumental music program. This individual will develop and lead curricular ensembles-such as concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, and jazz band-and oversee extracurricular instrumental opportunities, including pep band and small ensembles. The Director will foster a rigorous yet inclusive environment that promotes artistic excellence, personal growth, and a lifelong appreciation of music.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDirect all scheduled instrumental ensembles and coach students on proper technique, tone production, and musicality.Design and implement a sequential, high-quality music curriculum that aligns with the school's academic standards.Organize and conduct all school instrumental performances, including fall/spring concerts, graduation ceremonies, and community outreach performances.Actively promote the band program to recruit new students and encourage continued participation, collaborating with feeder schools or lower divisions.Maintain an accurate inventory of school-owned instruments, uniforms, and equipment; manage the annual instrumental music budget and submit purchase requests for new music, instruments, and repairs.Cultivate a vibrant performing arts culture by managing the Tri-M Music Honor Society and directing extracurricular ensembles (e.g., Jazz Band, Pep Band) to support school-wide spirit and events.Work collaboratively with the Vocal Music Director, theater faculty, and other departments to support all-school productions and assemblies.Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and program events; support band booster club activities.Maintain a professional atmosphere in the classroom, fostering a safe and encouraging environment for all students.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIORMENTRequired to walk; stoop, kneel or crouch; reach with hands and armsGenerally, the job requires 10% sitting, 90% walking, and standingThe employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 poundsClassroom work environmentPOSITION REQUIREMENTSCandidates should hold a Master's DegreeIndependent school teaching experienceIndependent school administrative experience is preferredCandidates should strongly identify with the School's mission, philosophy, and goalsComfortable working in a collaborative and team-oriented environmentStrong written and verbal communication skills
