Job Environmental Health & Safety Manager
Environmental Health & Safety ManagerManage and continuously improve environmental, health, and safety programs for the Springfield MO facility. Ensure full compliance with federal, state, local, and corporate regulatory requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safety Leadership & Culture
Develop and implement a comprehensive Safety Program emphasizing behavior?based initiatives and "Zero Potential" philosophy (proactive vs. reactive approach).
Facilitate risk assessments and drive injury reduction initiatives.
Ensure near?misses, concerns, and improvement ideas are welcomed, addressed, and communicated back.
Maintain a calm, approachable presence on the production floor to encourage open communication.
Model leadership based on partnership, coaching, respect, and engagement.
Develop and implement weekly Safety Gemba walks ensuring that all action items are completed timely and reported out.
Incident Management & Root Cause
Lead root-cause investigations using structured methodologies (e.g., 5?Why, A3, RCCM).
Oversee workers' compensation program, SAI360 incident reporting, and GEHS reporting.
Environmental Compliance
Manage all hazardous waste operations including registration, identification, transportation, disposal, audits, and training.
Ensure compliance with RCRA, CWA (including facility?specific WWTP), CAA, EPA, OSHA, and DOT (hazardous waste transport).
Prepare and submit required environmental permits and all regulatory reports.
Maintain environmental operating procedures to meet applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
Ensure required environmental monitoring and sampling is completed on schedule and in compliance.
Evaluate pollution control equipment needs; develop specifications and recommend improvements.
Coordinate corrective actions with maintenance to ensure emission control and treatment systems function properly.
Research and document compliance with customer?specific EHS specifications.
Support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification activities.
Coordinate sustainability?related EHS data and reporting.
Agency & Community Interaction
Serve as facility liaison with local community groups, regulatory agencies, and Local Emergency Planning Agencies (LEPA).
Document all communications with regulatory agencies and notify Corporate EHS of interactions.
Ensure all submissions to agencies are vetted through Legal as required.
Engineering, Capital Projects & Equipment Safety
Review all capital investments to ensure EHS considerations are integrated.
Maintain approved vendor list and ensure contractor compliance with EnerSys Contractor Policy.
Ensure all new or modified equipment is reviewed for safety features in design and pre?production phases.
Validate guarding, interlocks, and safety devices in automated environments.
Health & Industrial Hygiene
Manage blood lead level (BLL) testing cycles and medical surveillance.
Ensure proper hygiene facilities, change rooms, showers, and PPE programs.
Understand workplace health monitoring programs related to air lead, arsenic, cadmium, noise, etc.
Conduct ergonomic assessments focusing on repetitive, forceful, awkward, or high?frequency tasks.
Training & Documentation
Provide required training on regulatory EHS programs.
Integrate environmental and safety requirements into Work Instructions.
Maintain all required records, documentation, and reporting systems.
Site Support
Support both Plant 2 location directly and act as the backup support for Plant 1, MOVAC and MODC.
Support corporate initiatives including EOS from an EHS perspective.

Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Health, Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
5+ years of professional EHS management experience (7 preferred).
Minimum of 3 years in a manufacturing environment (5 preferred).
Professional certifications in Health, Safety, or Environmental fields are a plus.
Competencies & Skills
Strong working knowledge of EHS regulations applicable to EnerSys lead?acid operations.
ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 experience.
Auditing experience and formal auditing training.
Strong analytical and problem?solving abilities.
Experience working with all levels of management and cross?functional teams.
Experience collaborating with legal counsel, medical professionals, and laboratories.
Lean Management and 5S operational experience.
Fluency in English (required).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
