Recreation Specialist (Hourly)

Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.APPLICATION PROCESSApplicants will be assessed on the application submitted. City application required, including Supplemental Questionnaire.Essential and other important responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Recreation Leader.Plan, organize, develop, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs.Open and secure various facilities as assigned.Maintain and submit detailed reports and records as required.Attend meetings and training sessions as required.Attend training and fulfill duties and responsibilities for cash handling, if requested.Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.Exercise proper program safety practices and procedures while carrying out programs.Supervise program participants, staff and assigned facilities. Act as on-site program lead when necessary.Inspect, issue and manage equipment and supplies.Assist with hiring, orientation meetings, training and monitoring part-time staff.Assist in scheduling specific program hours; schedule and assign staff to provide program coverage, including contacting off-duty employees to make necessary adjustments in schedules.Ensure all staff and volunteers adhere to all City and Department program rules and guidelines; provide necessary discipline and accurate records of all incidents.Marginal Functions:Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge of:Practices and techniques for favorable public relations, group cooperation and programming for participants.Principles and practices of recordkeeping and scheduling.Recreational, social, and cultural needs of the community. Light custodial maintenance techniques.Ability to:Read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions and perform basic arithmetic.Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.Coordinate and schedule a variety of activities.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.Prepare reports and records as required.Work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.Run forward, backward and laterally.Travel from worksite to worksite as needed.Experience:1,000 hours of volunteer or paid work experience with children, teens, seniors, and/or disabled individuals.Training:Required to attend, participate and complete all trainings as assigned. Including, but not limited to, Mandated Reporter training.High School diploma or GED equivalency.License or Certificate:Possession of the below certificates are required to be obtained within 30 days of appointment to be scheduled and must be maintained for continued employment.Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED CertificateCertifications must have an in-person, instructor-led skills session with hands and breaths training.Additional Requirements:Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of application.NOTE: If hired, you will be required to be fingerprinted at time of appointment, in compliance with Section 10911-5 of the Education Code and Section 5164 of the Public Resources Code. Environmental: frequent exposure to noise.WORKING CONDITIONS:Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year round weather conditions. Duties may include some recreation-related field noise. Work often occurs at remote locations. Positions may require some overtime and weekend work and travel is rare.
