The Co-op School was founded in 2003 by a group of parents who saw the need for a high-quality and affordable preschool option in the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods. Since then, the Co-op School has matured from a small, parent-run playgroup to a fully staffed and licensed non-profit school.After residing in two prior homes in Clinton Hill, The Co-op School moved into 87 Irving Place in the fall of 2009. In 2011, The Co-op School launched the first kindergarten class of its elementary program at 40 Brevoort Place. In 2019, we opened our doors at 644 Gates Avenue in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood—in a 3,500-square-foot building with a double-height gym, a rooftop library, and two playgrounds—housing our preschool, lower school, and middle school students under one roof.OUR MISSIONThe mission of The Co-op School is to inspire passion and teach children to become protagonists in their own educational journey by fostering their innate sense of curiosity and creativity. It belongs to those who participate in it and is a more resilient and creative place because of it.Job SummaryWe began our elementary school with a single kindergarten class and the idea that learning should be joyful, student-driven, and inclusive. Over the years, we have developed a strong commitment to a curriculum that is project-based and anti-biased. We have continued to grow in order to foster students through their middle school years in a K-8 environment. As such, we are seeking an experienced and passionate STEM Teacher to join our middle school team. In addition to teaching courses in 5th-8th grade, the person hired will also serve as an advisor and be an integral component of the school community. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with our team to shape a meaningful, rigorous, and joyful program.ResponsibilitiesMaintain and develop a curriculum for the middle school STEM programTeach 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classesUse a variety of assessments, assignment types, and experiences to measure student learning and drive instructionProvide academic remediation and enrichment during WIN periodsServe as a middle school advisorProvide coverages as needed, including weekly lunch/recess dutiesActively participate in a learning community, including divisional meetings, peer observations, planning meetings, and staff meetings.Collaborate with middle school teachers, learning specialists, and the division head to plan out and provide high-quality, differentiated, and relevant instruction to all childrenRegularly communicate with families through school-sanctioned online platformsIntegrate The Co-op School Values into classroom culture, units of study, and interactions with staff, families, and studentsIntegrate the real world and the surrounding community into units of study, lessons, and classroom cultureMaintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleaguesMaintain confidentiality with student information and recordsCreate a positive and safe classroom culture and communityQualificationsA commitment to working with middle school students and an enthusiasm for making real-world connections through the fields of scienceBachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred; academic program focus in math, science, and/or education-related fields3 years+ experience teaching students in grades 5-8Experience working with children with special needs, as some students have IEPsA commitment to social justice and anti-bias curriculumEnthusiasm for the opportunities and challenges inherent in working with middle school studentsA willingness to collaborate with others and continually inspire students to love learningA reflective practitioner in a state of constant professional growthA willingness to share their craft with othersAn ability and willingness to differentiate instructionCommitment to and knowledge of progressive education and inquiry-based teaching and learningA positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humorTo Apply Send your resume to the Director of Human Resources, Evelyn@thecoopschool.org Annual Salary: The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $79,287; The position will be based on years ofexperience and education.Level: Full-Time Union PositionStart Date : August 2026This Position reports directly to the Upper School Division HeadThe Co-op School COVID-19 Vaccination PolicyWe appreciate your interest in employment at The Co-op School.
