Associate | Climate Strategy & Mitigation Specialist

Overview BuroHappold Engineering is seeking a full‑time Associate | Climate Strategy & Mitigation Specialist in Washington, DC, with a preference for candidates located in Los Angeles. The role involves leading climate‑related projects, conducting research and data analysis, and managing teams. Key Responsibilities Lead complex climate‑related projects for external clients (e.g., climate action plans, GHG inventories, sustainability plans, mitigation and resilience projects). Develop project work plans, scopes, timelines, costing, and specific analyses. Manage internal teams and external subcontractors, providing direction, feedback, and structure. Support business development by authoring proposals, joining client pitches, and writing scopes of work. Research and provide direction in development of recommendations. Oversee creation and delivery of reports, presentations, models, and other deliverables to key stakeholders. Build and maintain relationships with governmental, quasi‑governmental, private sector, civic, community, cultural, professional, and advocacy organizations. Facilitate workshops with clients on sustainability, resilience, and climate mitigation. Manage junior staff and provide guidance. Participate in local professional associations. Qualifications & Experience Degree in urban planning, urban policy, economics, real estate, sustainability management, engineering, or a related field. 7–10 years of consulting experience in a climate, resilience, or sustainability‑related field. Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills. Proficient in the GHG Protocol, carbon accounting approaches, and related frameworks. Experience with GHG mitigation strategies and net‑zero pathways. Quantitative analysis skills and experience delivering projects that include complex data analysis, energy assessments, GHG accounting, and forecasting. Ability to manage projects against tight timelines and coordinate internal and external collaborators. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, for complex climate mitigation and GHG emission concepts. Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite products (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) preferred. Knowledge or interest in economic development, environmental justice, and urban revitalization. PMP certification or experience with Power BI or Tableau is a plus. Compensation & Benefits Salary range $110,000 – $145,000, based on location, skills, education, and experience.
