Ratios are 1:3-4 depending on the acuity of assignment. Charting system is Cerner, with PCs available in the room. Charge nurse is present but does not take patients unless there is a high census. Patient care technicians are available on days and nights. Staff is required to work 3 of 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week period. Holidays are worked into the rotation. Scrub color is navy. Telemonitoring includes Philips monitors; RNs must interpret EKGs. Types of patients include those in cardiac stepdown, lung transplant, chest pain, myocardial infarction, pre-transplant, esophagectomy, emergency room overflow, and detox. Travelers do not take transplant patients and handle non-titrating gtts only. Cancellation policy allows up to 4 shifts to be canceled per 13-week assignment. Available resources include a SWAT RN for difficult IV sticks, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy available 24/7. Orientation includes 3 days on the floor, and RNs may float to other telemetry units. Common competencies include maintaining a sterile field for specific nursing skills.
