Duties Description The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking an Assistant Farm Products Inspector 1 to assist in conducting inspections of farm products at terminal market and shipping point locations in Orange County, New York. If you are interested in improving the quality of products marketed in New York State, then this is the right opportunity for you!The Assistant Farm Products Inspector 1 will assist in conducting and will also perform inspections of farm products at terminal market and shipping point locations in Orange County, New York. These inspections include the ability to obtain samples and determine and certify physical characteristics of produce, while keeping notes of findings and writing certificates with the results of those findings. Other duties may include conducting Food Safety Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audits at farms and in packing houses, Country of Origin retail reviews, sampling for Pesticide Data Program (PDP) and monitoring controlled atmosphere apple storage rooms. This position is temporary and seasonal, with regular renewals from season to season based on program needs. The two seasons run from April 1 through November 30 and December 1 through March 31.Field and Remote Work: Inspectors will be asked to complete administrative work, trainings, and inspection reports at their official station. While this position requires about 75% of inspector’s time in field, an inspector’s residence may be considered their official station if located in the county of their employment.Travel Requirements: Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area of assignment. Appointees to these positions may be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. If the position requires that you operate a motor vehicle, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Fieldwork and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule. Additional comments regarding the vacancy.
