Seasonal Garden Assistant
Position OverviewWashington Montessori School is seeking a motivated high school or college student with an interest in plant science, horticulture, or environmental stewardship to support garden maintenance and landscape enhancement projects on campus this summer. This is a hands-on learning opportunity ideal for students with an interest in gardening who want practical experience working with ornamental and pollinator plantings.The intern will work under the guidance of school staff, gaining exposure to plant care techniques, garden design concepts, and sustainable landscape practices.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform routine garden maintenance, including:Weeding garden beds and landscaped areasWatering plants and monitoring soil moisturePruning shrubs and perennials as directedAssist with installation and care of new plantingsSupport basic garden upkeep tasks such as mulching, edging, and debris removalHelp monitor plant health and identify basic issues (e.g., pests, drought stress)Maintain tools and work areas in a clean, safe conditionComplete other tasks to enhance and maintenance the school’s outdoor environment, as assignedLearning OpportunitiesHands-on experience with plant identification and careExposure to pollinator-friendly garden design and native plantingsInstruction in pruning techniques and seasonal maintenance practicesIntroduction to sustainable landscaping principlesQualificationsCurrent high school or college student (preference for students enrolled in plant science, agriculture, or environmental programs)Interest in gardening, horticulture, or environmental scienceWillingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditionsAbility to perform physical tasks (bending, lifting light materials, standing for extended periods)Reliable, self-motivated, and able to follow directionsPrior gardening experience is a plus How to ApplyPlease submit a brief statement of interest (a few paragraphs is sufficient) outlining your interest in gardening or plant science, along with any relevant coursework or experience.
