Job Description:SALARY: $54,849.08 - $67,389.40Commensurate with experience. Step Salary System to be awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step 1. Please note the salary range indicated is firm.Bargaining Unit: LaborersTo view the respective collective bargaining agreement please click here.REPORTS TO:Works under the general supervision of the DPW Commissioner, Director of Operations or their designee but reports directly to the Traffic Commissioner or their designee for daily assignment of duties and completion thereof.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Performs skilled labor duties in the construction and periodic maintenance of traffic signs and other aids to trafficRepairs or replaces signs damaged by accidentsErects supports for attaching signsPlaces portable traffic signs when needed and collects themErects barriers for parades or other events and operates related motor equipmentPerforms similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:Education and Experience: High school diploma required; technical training in the use of tools and construction equipment desired; two (2) years of general construction experience; experience operating trucks and heavy motor equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of techniques of construction and the operation of maintenance equipmentKnowledge of safety practices and proceduresAbility to perform heavy construction workAbility to solve construction related problemsAbility to operate heavy and other motor equipment, power, pneumatic and hand tools and specialized equipmentConstruction skillsSkills in operation of equipment and tools.Ability to support and create a welcoming culture of diversity, equity and inclusion amongst diverse audiences, including department staff, elected officials, and the public.Additional Requirement: Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brakes.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Work is performed outside and requires strenuous physical effort. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, sit, speak, hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, climb, and work in confined spaces. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions. Required to lift or move items weighing up to sixty (60) pounds. Physical ability to use power and hand tools, drive motor vehicles, operate and drive various pieces of special maintenance equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to operate vehicles and equipment.WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed outside, with exposure to loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts; outdoor work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with use of heavy equipment. Workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations often requiring emergency responses. The employee may operate a variety of heavy and other motor equipments, such as trucks. The employee also operates various hand power and pneumatic tools. The employee has general contact with other departments such as Traffic Commission and occasionally contractors.
