This person will bring strong fermentation expertise, along with experience in protein purification and downstream processing, including setting up and running equipment, and will help validate and improve our current manufacturing processes as we continue to scale.How you will add value to 20BLOC The Sr. Process Engineer will play a key role in advancing 20BLOC’s manufacturing capabilities by leading engineering projects that validate and improve the current process including precision fermentation and associated downstream unit operations. This is a highly hands-on position for someone with hands on fermentation process knowledge who is comfortable setting up, operating, and troubleshooting equipment in a regulated manufacturing environment. The role works closely with Manufacturing, MSAT, Quality, and Engineering, and may also provide leadership to the engineering team as needed.Key ResponsibilitiesProcess Engineering & ImprovementLead engineering projects to improve current manufacturing processes, with a primary focus on fermentation, protein purification, and associated downstream equipmentProvide hands-on support for fermentation process setup, equipment startup, operation, troubleshooting, and day-to-day executionPartner with cross-functional teams to run engineering studies, solve process issues, and implement practical improvements to equipment, workflows, and process controlsDrive continuous improvement initiatives that support reliable scale-up and routine GMP manufacturingSupport equipment commissioning, operational readiness, and process optimization efforts to improve robustness, consistency, and manufacturing efficiencyCross-Functional Technical LeadershipServe as a senior technical resource across Manufacturing, MSAT, Engineering, and Quality for fermentation-related process decisions and troubleshootingBring experience from larger pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical organizations to help establish strong engineering practices and execution disciplineProvide leadership and direction to the engineering team when needed, while remaining a hands-on contributorPractical Execution & Team SupportOperate effectively in a small-company environment while creating a high bar for technical excellence within the organizationBe comfortable working directly with equipment and on the manufacturing floor to solve problems and support executionContribute as an individual expert today, with the capability to grow into broader engineering leadership responsibilities as the organization growsEducationBachelor’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related technical discipline requiredAdvanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a related field preferredExperience10–15 years of experience in process engineering, manufacturing support, MSAT, or technical operations within biotech, biopharma, or related regulated environmentsStrong background in fermentation and protein purification, including hands-on experience with upstream and downstream processes and the setup and operation of related equipmentPrior experience in large pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical companies, with exposure to established engineering systems and best practices is preferredDemonstrated track record of leading engineering projects to improve existing manufacturing processesSkills & CompetenciesDeep technical understanding of fermentation, protein purification, and practical process engineering in a GMP manufacturing environmentHands-on, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working directly with equipment to support setup, operation, troubleshooting, and process improvementStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to translate process observations into effective engineering improvementsAble to balance hands-on execution with strategic thinking and cross-functional collaborationCapable of influencing technical direction and providing informal or formal leadership to engineering teams as neededPlease apply at jobs@20bloc.com – in subject line: Sr. Process EngineerThis is a full-time, on-site position located in Thousand Oaks, California, and requires working on-site Monday through Friday.
