Summer 2026 Internship: Engineering (Massachusetts)
Focus on support activities for the Manufacturing Engineering Department and help achieve best practice manufacturing processes and techniques.Internship dates: May 18th - August 14th (dates will vary depending on local college calendars)Location, Schedule, & Compensation:In-office/non-remoteSpringfield, MA40 hours per weekMonday-FridayPaidESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Responding to requests for engineering services with thorough, accurate, timely and cost-effective solutionsUsing appropriate project management techniques to ensure tools, gauges, fixtures, equipment, department-layouts, routings, assembly procedures and CNC programs are fully defined, documented and implementedConducting continuous evaluation and suggesting improvements within the manufacturing environment to assure quality and cost objectives are consistently achievedWorking closely with multiple groups of diverse interests (Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design, Production floor, Quality Engineering, etc.) while investigating, supporting and implementing improvements and alternatives to existing processesUnder general supervision, reviewing progress and results; recommending changes in procedures; operating with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action or decisionOther duties may be assignedQUALIFICATIONS:High school/GEDMust be currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering program or be a recent graduate of such programA machining and inspection skill setMust have working command of the English languageMust be able to read, write and interpret the English languageMust be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (verbal instructions, written memos and instructions)Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPointSolidWorks and or CAM knowledge a plusTRAINING REQUIREMENTS:Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and positionParticipate in and follow all company initiativesParticipate in continuous improvement projects (Kaizen events, 5S, etc.)PHYSICAL DEMANDS:* Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, reach, twist* Must be able to lift up to 50 poundsPERSONNEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on factory floorThe use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwearAll employees are required to apply ergonomic correctness to all job tasksWORK ENVIRONMENT:Normal office environment conditionsWithin the Smith & Wesson manufacturing facility, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lightingWork environment is similar to most manufacturing operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lightingUpdated 1/27/26
