Job OverviewThe Assistant Director of Transportation - Student Safety & Support (SSS) provides districtwide leadership for Student Safety & Support within Transportation by ensuring safe, supportive, and consistent student transportation experiences across all transportation centers. This role leads student behavior support systems, staff training, campus collaboration, and intervention strategies that directly impact student success, safety, and service reliability on school buses. The Assistant Director serves as the primary authority for transportation-related student support, behavioral intervention, and safety alignment, partnering closely with transportation leadership, campuses, Student Services, and Safety & Security.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesStudent Safety, Behavior Support & Transportation ReadinessLead the district's Student Safety & Support framework for all transportation servicesEnsure student behavior support strategies are consistently implemented across transportation centersProvide direct intervention support on routes identified as high-need or high-riskServe as an escalation point for complex student behavior, safety, or service issuesSupport safe transportation operations through on-route observation, feedback, and interventionOperational Alignment & Campus CollaborationMaintain regular communication with transportation center leadership to identify student support needsPartner with campuses, Special Education teams, and Student Services to align transportation strategies with student IEPs and behavior plansParticipate in IEP meetings and campus conferences as requiredServe as Transportation's subject-matter expert on student behavior and safetyTraining, Coaching & Staff DevelopmentLead the development and delivery of student behavior and safety training for drivers, attendants, and supervisorsProvide CPI and de-escalation training specific to the school bus environmentSupport onboarding and ongoing development of transportation staff related to student managementModel appropriate behavior intervention techniques and professional conductData, Compliance & Program OversightCollect, analyze, and interpret data related to student behavior incidents on busesEnsure compliance with federal, state, district, and department guidelinesMaintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to student safety and supportSupport the development and enforcement of transportation policies related to student conductLeadership, Communication & District EngagementProvide regular updates and recommendations to the Executive Director and department leadershipCommunicate clearly and professionally with parents, campuses, and community stakeholdersSupport district initiatives and transportation improvement effortsMaintain confidentiality and professionalism at all timesSupervisory ResponsibilitiesProvide leadership and functional oversight to Student Safety & Support staff and assigned specialistsSupport evaluation, coaching, and performance management of staff involved in student supportCollaborate with leadership on staffing strategies related to student needsQualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. Irregular hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to support operational needs.
