Senior Controls Engineer
Job Title: Sr Controls EngineerJob DescriptionThe Sr Controls Engineer designs, develops, and supports modern industrial automation systems with a strong focus on Ignition SCADA/HMI and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC platforms. This role spans the full project lifecycle—from concept and design through development, testing, commissioning, and ongoing client support. You will work hands-on across Ignition, PLCs, and field commissioning, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable automation solutions. In addition, you will mentor junior engineers, help standardize engineering practices, and communicate clearly with stakeholders about project progress, scope changes, and technical challenges.ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop, and support Ignition-based SCADA and HMI systems, primarily using Ignition 8.x with exposure to legacy 7.9 environments.Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, primarily on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley CompactLogix and ControlLogix platforms.Lead and support automation projects across the full lifecycle, including requirements definition, system design, development, testing, commissioning, and post-startup client support.Work across Ignition, PLCs, and field commissioning activities, adjusting responsibilities based on project and client needs.Perform PLC/HMI programming and systems integration for industrial applications using multiple platforms and technologies.Implement and support SCADA, HMI, and control system designs that meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.Develop and review electrical schematics, P&IDs, flow diagrams, and related control system documentation.Apply UL 508A, IEEE, and NEC standards in the design and implementation of control systems.Utilize AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or ePlan to create and update electrical and control system drawings.Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link, ControlNet, and DeviceNet.Integrate control systems with SQL databases and other enterprise systems to support data collection, reporting, and analytics.Use Python and Java within Ignition and related environments to extend system functionality and automate tasks.Support process automation initiatives and contribute to IT/OT network convergence efforts.Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, technicians, and clients to define requirements and deliver high-quality automation solutions on time.Mentor junior engineers by reviewing work, sharing best practices, and contributing to repeatable and scalable engineering standards.Communicate clearly and consistently with internal teams and clients regarding project status, technical challenges, and scope changes.Troubleshoot control systems, HMIs, PLCs, and associated electrical equipment to resolve issues efficiently in the field and remotely.Work with Rockwell Automation, Wonderware, and Inductive Automation HMI/SCADA products as needed for project requirements.Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, templates, and standards to enhance quality and efficiency.Essential SkillsAt least 5 years of experience as a controls engineer in an automation or systems integration environment (not limited to a single plant setting).At least 5 years of hands-on experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs, including CompactLogix and ControlLogix platforms.At least 5 years of experience with Ignition SCADA/HMI development and support.Strong proficiency in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and control system design.Hands-on experience with Ignition versions 7.9 through 8.x for SCADA/HMI development.Solid understanding in automation, HMI development, and SCADA systems.Strong electrical engineering and electrical design knowledge related to control systems.Ability to read, create, and modify electrical schematics, P&IDs, and flow diagrams.Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical for control and electrical design.Experience with Rockwell Automation products and RSLogix or related Rockwell software tools.Experience with PLC/HMI programming and systems integration in industrial applications using multiple platforms.Working knowledge of UL 508A, IEEE, and NEC standards as they apply to control panels and electrical systems.Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link, ControlNet, and DeviceNet.Strong troubleshooting skills for PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and electrical control systems.Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate clearly with clients.Additional Skills & QualificationsMinimum of 3 years of focused experience in Ignition development, including project design, scripting, and deployment.Experience with Ignition 7.9–8.3, including migration and support of legacy projects.Experience with SQL databases for data logging, reporting, and system integration.Experience using Python within Ignition or similar environments for scripting and automation.Experience with Java or Java-based environments related to Ignition or supporting tools.Experience in process automation and industrial controls applications.Exposure to network IT/OT convergence, including integrating control systems with enterprise networks.Experience with Wonderware and other HMI/SCADA platforms in addition to Ignition.Experience with Inductive Automation HMI/SCADA tools and related modules.Familiarity with Siemens PLCs and FANUC or similar robotics platforms.Experience with ePlan or similar tools for electrical and control system design is a plus.Ability to mentor and support junior engineers and contribute to standardization of engineering practices.Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation, reporting, and client interaction.Motivation to pursue advanced Ignition certifications, with support available to achieve Gold-level certification.Work EnvironmentThis is a full-time role with a standard schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional overtime and travel based on project needs. Client sites are typically within a two-hour radius, which helps limit extended travel. The organization offers unlimited overtime opportunities and provides a monthly vehicle allowance plus a gas card to support travel to client locations. Work involves a mix of office-based engineering tasks—such as design, programming, and documentation—and on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, and client support in industrial environments.
