Operations Assistant, Camp Counselor & CoachJob DescriptionReports to: Associate DirectorAcademy Camps is an overnight sports-specific sleepaway experience that takes place on the Suffield Academy (CT) campus. We are looking for an experienced Operations Assistant to be a member of our operations team and camp counselor staff. As a member of the counselor staff you will live in a girls dorm.Who we areAcademy Camps is a modern approach to the sports camp experience. We offer 1-week sessions for Boys & Girls aged 10 - 15 interested in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, squash, swimming, tennis & volleyball. Our campers choose one of our 8 "Academy Sports" and receive 2 intensive training sessions per day with our high-performance coaching staff.We are a dedicated team of high performance coaches, nurturing & exemplary counselors, and experienced camp professionals, passionate about the 'whole athlete'. Outside of sports specific training sessions, AC is distinguished in delivering programming focused on its pillars of Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership mixed in with a healthy dose of fun through a daily schedule of traditional sleepaway camp activities.PositionOur Operations Assistants & Coaches will be responsible for assisting the directors and senior staff with day-to-day operations of the camp pertaining to program, facility, special events, and enforcing camp policies and procedures. This could include setting up for a Barn Party, re-setting the Athlete's Lounge after a big ping pong tournament, preparing for a 15-stop Challenge Tour, washing 100s of tie-dye shirts, or preparing afternoon snack for the full camp community.In addition to operations, all Coaches have responsibilities as Dorm Counselors. In collaboration with your co-dorm counselor, you will oversee a group of 10-15 campers throughout the day. During a day at camp you will be assigned to various camp activities - like running a camp elective or serving as a Head Coach for our AC Cup. By injecting the camp spirit into moments of play, you help to reduce the pressures and expectations that come with being a young athlete today.This Operations person will have the opportunity (if 21 years or older) to serve as a driver. They'd be responsible for transporting campers and staff to and from airports, bus drop-off/pick-up locations, far-campus electives, and bridge weekend excursions.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:OPERATIONS LIFE -Execute daily operational setups, clean-ups, and resets across campus (including program areas, the Athlete's Lounge, and Quad) to ensure spaces are ready and welcoming for each activity block.Provide facilities and logistics support, including tent and signage set up, mail and package distribution, snack shack preparation, and managing the camp's Lost & Found process.Assist with inventory management, program set up and tear-down, and other operational tasks to keep camp running smoothly.Support the Leadership Team - specifically the Admin and Program teams - as needed based on overall camp operations needs.DORM LIFE -Live in a dorm with other coaches and work in concert with co-counselors to effectively manage the dorm as a unified team and to ensure a quality camp experience for every camperGet to know every camper well and respond to their individual needsEncourage, support and set limits for campers to support the camper's physical and emotional healthTeach campers to develop good self-care and independent living skillsBe a quality role model for children, maintain general dorm cleanliness, and be safety conscious at all timesCAMP LIFE -Assist in the planning of, and participate as a member of the camp team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.Actively participate in all staff training & meetingsPrepare for, accept feedback, and constructively problem-solve during supervision sessionsOPTIONAL: TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS -Safety transport campers and staff during:Arrival and departure days (airport and bus locations)Bridge weekend trips (optional participation included with a free ticket to the excursion)Mid-week elective & evening program transportation (to yoga, meditation, rock climbing, and ropes course on the far end of campus)As needed: trips to off-campus doctor's appointmentsMaintain timely schedules and clean communication with the Operations teamConduct basic vehicle checks and report issuesYour Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities4+ years of sports experience (required)Experience working with youth in sports or educational programs (required)Desire to gain experience within a youth sports start-up (preferred)An excellent relationship builder - quick to connect, build trust, and rapportA goal-oriented coach - motivated to help our athletes achieve their goalsA creative problem-solver - with an empathetic approach to customer service, team management, and ability to ask for help when neededA growth mindset - an orientation towards learning and development; willing to receive and implement feedback and learn from mistakesIf you are interested in the additional driving responsibilities, please review the following requirements:Must be 21 years of age or olderMinimum of 5 years of driving experienceValid U.S. driver's license or an international staff who is legally eligible to operate a motor vehicle in the U.S.Must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check meeting Academy Camps and insurance carrier standards, including no DUI/DWI history, no major recent driving violations, and a clean and responsible driving record.Medically fit to operate a vehicle safely (documentation may be required)Willingness to complete all Academy Camps driver safety training prior to transporting campersComfortable driving passenger vans and transporting youth safely and responsiblyComfortable driving on highways, freeways, and longer-distance routesExpectations, Compensation, and BenefitsAvailable and on-site for the dates of the full summer session including staff pre-season training and post-camp: June 20 - August 8The AC compensation package is competitive and is commensurate with skills and experience. Compensation is $2,500 - 4,000 and includes room and board.
