Machine Learning Research Engineer
An exciting & innovative company working at the intersection of machine learning and scientific discovery is hiring an ML Research Engineer to help own and evolve the engineering and research-engineering side of its platform. This person will work closely with technical leadership to build on an existing foundation-model-based platform and help shape what comes next.The roleBuild on and improve an existing ML platform and codebaseWork hands-on with model architecture implementation in Python and PyTorchUnderstand, modify, and extend existing foundation model approaches, including flow matching, diffusion-style methods, and transformer-based architecturesContribute ideas on future model directions and platform improvementsWork closely with cross-functional teammates across technical and domain backgroundsCommunicate technical work clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including leadership and investorsRequirementsStrong hands-on experience building and implementing ML modelsDeep understanding of model architecture, mathematics, and practical implementationExperience working with Python and PyTorchAbility to work within an existing ML codebase, understand what has been built, and identify what should come nextStrong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly across diverse audiencesComfortable operating in a startup environment and incorporating feedback quicklyPreferred backgroundPhD or strong Computer Science (+5 years of industry exp) background in a relevant fieldExperience in biotech, chemtech, computational biology, or related scientific ML environmentsExperience working with chemistry, biology, or molecular dataExperience with foundation models, flow matching, diffusion, or transformer architecturesStartup experience, ideally in an applied ML environment where research is translated into practical outputsIdeal candidateSomeone with a strong ML foundation who can combine technical depth with strong communication and commercial awareness. This person should be able to work hands-on in the code, think creatively about future model development, and collaborate effectively with both domain experts and non-technical stakeholders.The role is offering a salary of up to $400,000 per annum + a wealth of benefits including Stock compensation plan (equity), platinum health, dental, and vision cover for you and your dependents, a 401(k) with up to 4% company match, flexible PTO & more.Based in San Francisco Bay Area Or San Diego.
