SHASTA AND GAZELLEUnder general direction, to perform a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on gas, propane, and diesel power driven equipment; and to do related work as required.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a journey level Heavy Equipment Mechanic classification. Incumbents perform a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work on County light and heavy power driven equipment and busses. This class is distinguished from Automotive Mechanic in that incumbents in the Automotive Mechanic classification are not normally assigned to perform mechanical work on heavy construction equipment or busses. Incumbents are expected to provide their own tools and locking tool boxes.REPORTS TOEquipment Maintenance Manager, Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Road Maintenance District Manager, Road Maintenance Station Supervisor, Transportation Services Coordinator or Transportation Services ManagerCLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISEDThis is not a supervisory class. However, an incumbent may provide some guidance for "work experience" trainees assigned who assist with mechanical work.Examples of DutiesInspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical and/or electrical defects on County trucks, and variety of light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts transmissions, differentials, air brakes, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, clutches, and engines; tunes-up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces and repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and other components; works on generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; changes and installs belts and hoses; maintains time and materials records for work orders; changes tires; fits chains according to seasonal requirements; orders and maintains inventory of requisite parts and supplies; carries out preventive maintenance programs; may weld and fabricate parts and equipment; may make field and emergency repairs; installs emergency warning equipment; may road test repaired equipment; operates a computerized inventory and vehicle maintenance information system; may provide guidance for "work experience" assistants; may operate road maintenance equipment as required.Knowledge of:Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in skilled gas, propane and diesel-powered equipment maintenance and repair work.Operation and care of internal combustion engines and components.Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.Safe work practices and procedures.Hydraulic valves and controls, hydraulic and air brake systems, and electronic ignition systems.Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding.Desired Skills:Inspect gas, propane, and diesel-powered equipment and accurately diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical defects.Skillfully use a variety of hand and power tools in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment, heavy equipment, and busses.Performed skilled testing, adjustment, repair, and overhaul work on automotive equipment, heavy equipment, and busses.Read and interpret shop and repair manuals.Apply technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical trades work.Estimate time and materials for repair jobs.Maintain accurate records and reports.Operate light and heavy road maintenance equipment in a safe manner.Use computerized inventory and information systems.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.Typical QualificationsDesirable Qualifications:Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying.A typical way, but not required, to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:- Two years of responsible work experience as a journey level automotive mechanic, preferably including substantial experience in working on heavy construction equipment and/or buses.- Possession of EPA 609 AC certification.- Possession of air brake certification.Special Requirements:-Applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment physical examination.-Must have a valid driver's license.Public Works Department: Employees must obtain and maintain a valid Class A driver's license within the first six (6) months of employment with applicable endorsements and certification.General Services: Employees must obtain and maintain a valid Class B driver's license within the first six (6) months of employment with applicable endorsements and certification.NOTE: This job classification is required to participate in the County of Siskiyou Drug and Alcohol Testing program as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment/pre-duty drug test. This position will also be subject to random drug and alcohol tests once employed by the County.Supplemental InformationTYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSOccasionally sits; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use a variety of hand and power equipment, electrical testing equipment used in the mechanical trades; use a computer and telephone; operate a variety of road maintenance equipment.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in a shop environment; occasionally works outdoors in varying temperatures; exposure to hazardous materials, smoke, gasses, and fumes; exposure to hazards such as moving machine parts and electrical current; continuous contact with other staff.NOTE:Various bargaining units may have benefits that alter from this general summary. Full-time employees accrue twenty-six (26) floating holiday hours on the paycheck that includes January 1 of each year. Part-time accrue a pro-rata of floating holiday hours on the paycheck that includes January 1 of each year. Employees hired during the year will receive prorated floating holiday hours with the hours being rounded to the nearest onethird (4 months) of the year.Vacation:Employees with less than five (5) years of continuous employment will accrue 3.08 hours of vacation leave per pay period.Employees with five (5) years but less than ten (10) years of continuous employment will accrue 4.62 hours of vacation leave per pay period.Employees with ten (10) or more years of continuous employment will accrue 6.16 hours of vacation leave per pay period. The maximum vacation accrual is 312 hours.Employees will be allowed to accrue above their vacation accrual limits during the calendar year. Employees who on the first full pay period in January of any year exceed the vacation maximum of 312 hours, will not accrue additional vacation hours until the vacation balance is reduced to the limit allowed.Sick Leave:Employees will accrue sick leave at the rate of 3.7 hours per pay period. Part-time employees will accrue sick leave on a pro-rated basis.Employees may use up to forty-eight (48) hours annually for the care of an immediate family member. "Family Member" is defined as parent, child, spouse, registered domestic partner, parent-in-law, sibling, grandchild or grandparent.Upon retirement employees may convert unused sick leave towards CalPERS service credit. Employees with five (5) or more years of continuous service, upon death or retirement may receive 33 1/3% of the monetary value of their accrued and unused sick leave in excess of 96 hours with a maximum payout of $1500.Health & Dental Plan:The County contracts for employee, dependents, retirees and dependents medical insurance benefit plans through the CalPERS Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care Program.Effective plan year 2023, the County will contribute up to the following amounts towards employee medical insurance coverage and cafeteria plan benefits:The total benefit is equal to 95% of the Region 1 CalPERS Gold health plan plus 95% of the dental premium.Effective plan year 2024, the County contributes up to the following amounts towards employee medical insurance coverage and cafeteria plan benefits:The total benefit shall be equal to 90% of the Region 1 CalPERS Gold health plan plus 90% of the dental premium.Effective plan year 2025, the County contributes up to the following amounts towards employee medical insurance coverage and cafeteria plan benefits:The total benefit shall be equal to 85% of the Region 1 CalPERS Gold health plan plus 85% of the dental premium.Vision Plan:The County will contribute 100% of the vision premium.Life Insurance:The County will maintain life insurance for $50,000.Retirement:Employees hired prior to November 2, 2012, will receive the 2% at 55 miscellaneous CalPERS formula with the single highest year calculation for final compensation. These employees pay the required seven percent (7%) member contribution, on a pre-tax basis.Employees hired after November 1, 2012, who are not classified as a new member will receive the 2% at 60 miscellaneous CalPERS formula with the highest three (3) year average calculation for final compensation. These employees pay the required seven percent (7%) member contribution, on a pre-tax basis.Employees hired after December 31, 2012, who are classified as a new member will receive the 2% at 62 miscellaneous CalPERS formula with the highest three (3) year average calculation for final compensation.
