Youth Mentor, Substitute Position

Job Description Description:Position OverviewThe Youth Mentor is a part-time, youth-facing position responsible for supporting a consistent group of students in an after-school setting. Youth Mentors serve as positive adult role models, providing supervision, mentorship, and engaging activities that support students' academic, social-emotional, and physical development.This role works closely with Site Leads and Assistant Programs Manager to ensure a safe, structured, and supportive program environment.________________________________________Key ResponsibilitiesYouth Supervision & SupportProvide consistent, active supervision of assigned students during program hoursServe as a positive role model, mentor, and support person for youthMaintain a safe and respectful environment aligned with program expectationsUse positive behavior guidance and redirection strategiesObserve and report concerns related to student safety, behavior, or well-being________________________________________Program Activities & EngagementSupport and facilitate age-appropriate activities across academic support, enrichment, recreation, and wellnessAssist with planning and preparing materials for daily activitiesEncourage participation, teamwork, and positive peer interactionsSupport transitions between activities, snack time, and dismissal________________________________________Program Operations & SafetyAccurately complete attendance rosters and required documentationFollow all organizational policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocolsSupport snack or meal distribution and clean-upMaintain a clean, organized program space________________________________________Communication & TeamworkCommunicate regularly with Site Leads or Program Managers regarding student needs and concernsBuild positive, respectful relationships with students, families, and staffParticipate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions________________________________________Professional ConductMaintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and staffDemonstrate reliability, punctuality, and professionalismUphold PAL Center's mission, values, and code of conductCompensation & Benefits$21–$24 per hour, based on experienceConsistent part-time schedule during after-school hoursPaid training and professional development opportunitiesSupportive, mission-driven team environmentMeaningful work supporting youth and familiesRequirements:QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent requiredExperience working with youth in an after-school, school-day, recreation, or community-based setting preferredStrong communication and group supervision skillsAbility to manage small and large groups of youthCultural responsiveness and ability to work with diverse communitiesBilingual English/Spanish preferredBasic computer skills (email, attendance systems, digital forms)________________________________________RequirementsTB clearance (updated every three years)Fingerprinting/background clearance (provided if needed)CPR/First Aid certification (training may be provided, recertification every two years)Reliable transportation to assigned program site
