Senior Data Engineer - DevOps

At Wi‑Tronix, we're transforming rail safety, performance, and operations through real-time insights and intelligent digital products. We're seeking a Senior Database Engineer to ensure the performance, reliability, security, and scalability of our enterprise data platforms. As we migrate to AWS Aurora PostgreSQL, much of the traditional database administration burden (patching, backups, failover, scaling) shifts to the managed service, so this role focuses less on routine DBA operations and more on data modeling, query and performance optimization, and enabling advanced analytics.This makes it a strong fit for an experienced database professional, or a senior software developer with deep SQL and performance-tuning expertise who wants to expand into cloud data infrastructure and administration. You'll support product development, lead key initiatives such as our MSSQL-to-PostgreSQL migration, modernize our cloud data infrastructure, and help enable advanced analytics. Working closely with DevOps, Product, Engineering, and IT teams, you'll play a key role in delivering scalable, high-quality solutions that power the future of rail technology.Core FunctionsOptimize and secure data across MSSQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, time-series, and managed database services (AWS Aurora, RDS)Troubleshoot performance issues and optimize queries, indexes, functions, and stored proceduresLead and support the migration from MSSQL to PostgreSQL, and contribute to broader modernization effortsDesign efficient, scalable data models and partner with developers to define standards and best practicesManage and tune managed database services, including configuration, monitoring, and cost/performance optimizationBuild dashboards, reports, and data integrations, and help enable advanced analyticsContribute to data architecture decisions across products and internal systemsProvide guidance on database best practices and emerging technologiesParticipate in on‑call rotationPosition QualificationsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (Master's a plus)6+ years of database engineering experience, or equivalent senior software development experience with deep SQL expertiseStrong expertise with PostgreSQL, SQL Server (2016–2022), and relational database designProven success with performance tuning, indexing strategies, and T‑SQL/PL‑pgSQL optimizationExperience with AWS Aurora, AWS RDS, Redis, and virtualized environmentsExperience with database migrations, ideally MSSQL to PostgreSQLFamiliarity with Python, .NET, C++, and third‑party SQL toolingExcellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skillsAgile mindset; able to work iteratively and adapt quicklyTechnology enthusiast who stays current with new tools and trendsWork EnvironmentHybrid schedule: Tuesday–Thursday in our Bolingbrook, IL officeMust be able to board a locomotive for field researchDomestic and international travel may be requiredREADY TO HELP SCALE THE COMMERCIAL ENGINE BEHIND A GROWING TECHNOLOGY COMPANY?If you enjoy bringing order to complexity, improving processes, and helping cross-functional teams work more effectively together, we'd like to meet you.
