General Environmental Technician Foreman

DescriptionUnder general supervision, assists in the supervision of the maintenance of a group of workers engaged in the more skilled ground maintenance activities, floriculturist activities, and/or janitorial activities.Examples of DutiesSupervise and schedules the work of a moderately sized group of employees engaged in skilled ground maintenance activities, floriculturist activities and/or janitorial activities. • Inspect work performed to ensure conformance to specifications and established standards.Instruct employees in the performance of their duties and in the care of building and grounds activities.Order, store, and issue cleaning/janitorial supplies, perform cleaning/janitorial activities.Pick up debris, mow lawns, seed, sod, fertilize, and water grass areas; plant, remove, spray, and mulch trees, shrubs, and evergreens.Remove snow and apply salt to walkways and parking areas.Prepare and maintain daily work assignments and records.Perform duties related to skilled ground maintenance activities, floriculturist activities, and/or janitorial activities.Perform duties in accordance with Departmental safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designated personal protective equipment and ensure proper safety precautions are taken, in accordance with MIOSHA standards.Perform additional duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or G.E. D.Two (2) years experience in the care and maintenance of grounds, lawns, landscape and/or janitorial/cleaning work, and one (1) year of supervisory experience. ORHigh School Diploma or G.E. D.Four (4) years experience in garden and greenhouse work including planning and laying out work for a group of workers engaged in the care of native and tropical plants, annuals, perennials, and other outdoor plant material, and one (1) year of supervisory experience.Licensing and CertificationsEmployees hired in Ground Maintenance are required to have both of the following credentials. The candidate must possess one credential at the time of certification and obtain the other within six (6) months of being hired. Candidates not possessing a State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) must meet the State of Michigan Driving Eligibility Requirement for application for a CDL at the time of certification.Persons in this classification must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan CDL with a Group B endorsement or higher with air brakes, within six (6) months of being hired into the position. The employee must also possess and carry a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate of certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with the State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988.Employees hired in Ground Maintenance and Landscape Design division are required to obtain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification with Categories: 3B (ornamental), 7E (interiorscape) or 6 (right of way) within six (6) months of being hired into the position.Employees are required to wear appropriate safety attire in accordance with departmental and OSHA safety regulations.Supplemental InformationEvaluation PlanInterview: P/FEvaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications: 100%Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%Additional points may be awarded for:* Veteran Points: 0 - 15 points* Detroit Residency Credit: 15 pointsLRD: 04/24/2025
