Head of Tax (Tax Manager)

Lisa Loguidice is actively recruiting for a Head of Tax (Tax Manager) position for a prestigious nonprofit in Los Angeles. If you are interested in learning more about this position, please apply for immediate consideration.This position reports to the head of finance and operates in a professional environment and works closely with finance leadership and institutional partners to support the organization’s mission through sound tax governance.Key ResponsibilitiesTax Compliance & FilingsManage preparation, review, and timely filing of all required non-profit tax returns (i.e., 990PF and 990T), including federal, state, and local filings in coordination with external tax firm.Oversee California based property tax (including non-profit exemptions), sales and use tax, and other indirect tax filings.Ensure compliance with federal and multi-state tax requirements and registrations.Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations impacting non-profit organizations and advise leadership accordingly.Understanding the impact and providing guidance on (UBIT)Tax Accounting & ReportingPrepare and review income tax provisions, deferred tax calculations, and related disclosures for financial statements.Assist with year-end close processes related to tax accounts and reporting.Endowment & Investment SupportProvide tax oversight for a large endowment with significant private equity investments (60%+), including review of K‑1s and investment-related tax matters.Coordinate with internal investment and finance teams, and external advisors on tax implications of investment activities.Audits & Stakeholder SupportServe as primary tax liaison for internal and external auditors.Respond to tax authority inquiries and manage tax audits and examinations.Support internal stakeholders across the institution with tax planning, compliance, and advisory needs.Leadership & CollaborationManage and mentor a small team of tax professionals, including workload planning, performance goals and reviews, and professional development.Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, legal, foundation grants, and operations teams.Contribute to process improvements, documentation, and internal controls related to tax.QualificationsEducationBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or similar field.Master’s degree in Taxation is a plus.ExperienceTen or more years of experience in non-profit tax or public accounting with exposure to corporate and multi-state taxation and 990 returns.Demonstrated experience with federal and state compliance, tax provisions, deferred tax accounting, audits, and complex filings with IRS.Experience managing and developing staff is required.Experience supporting investment structures, including private equity, is strongly preferred.Technical SkillsStrong proficiency in Oracle Fusion or similar enterprise resource planning software, and cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools (e.g. Office365, Zoom, Teams, Acrobat, DocuSign)In-depth knowledge of non-profit tax regulations and reporting requirements.Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including tax-related financial statement reporting and disclosures.Ability to interpret complex tax rules and clearly communicate implications to non-tax stakeholders.Core CompetenciesStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent organizational skills.High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.Effective communicator with a collaborative, service-oriented mindset.Ability to operate independently while supporting a mission-driven organization.High level of integrity and ability to handle sensitive information with the utmost discretion and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
