They help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem. The Head Coach will establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:Begins practice sessions on the opening date allowed by the MHSAAll teams will compete in the maximum number of contests allowed by the MHSA if it is reasonably possible to schedule this numberHolds first aid card and runs as safely as possible the program with proper training procedures.Teaches and displays good sportsmanshipAny season that extends beyond the normal season/school year due to tournament participation shall be considered part of the coaching contractProcess end of year reports, and any other necessary reports, lists or forms and submits such reports to the Athletic Director, school and MHSADevelops a daily and weekly practice schedule which will be approved by the Athletic Director prior to distribution to team membersYEAR-ROUND RESPONSIBILITIES:Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport. Encourages assistant coaches to do the sameAttends clinics, workshops, and meetings to keep abreast of new ideas, techniques, and rule changesImplements proper procedures for out of season practices according to MHSA guidelinesIs active in professional organizations such as state coach's associationInventories, selects, cares for and maintains equipmentPRE-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:Formulates objectives for the upcoming sports seasonAssists Athletic Director with proper registration of all athletesReviews District policy on accident reporting and insurance proceduresAssists Athletic Director in compiling eligibility lists and other reportsArranges for a systematic issuance of school equipmentMakes sure all athletes have had physicals and signed waiver granting permission to transport to nearest hospital in the event of injury before they may practiceExplains all regulations of the district presented in the Athletic CodeClarifies to athletes the letter award policySelects and instructs team managers on proper care of equipment, facilities, and other assigned dutiesMakes arrangements for all bus trips with Athletic DirectorPrepares a written document of the method of squad cuts and awards systemEstablishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competitionMaintains on file a game book specifying usual season work-outs, off-season work-out, weight training program, suggested diet, schedule, and plays/strategySEASONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Attend District, State, and National leadership and fall leadership conferenceAssumes responsibility for constant care and supervision of equipment and facilities being usedSupervises control over all phases of teams in the programOrganizes and schedules practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete's greatest potentialApplies discipline in a firm, positive and consistent manner as outlined according to athletic policyEmphasizes safety precautions and uses accepted training and injury procedures. Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow upConducts self and team in ethical manner during practice and contestsReports outcome of home contests to mediaInstructs players on rules and rule changes, and new ideas and techniquesProvides Athletic Director a file copy of all general correspondence and bulletins to student athletes and parentsAdheres to the rules and regulations of the School District regarding school bus regulationsFiles discipline reports with the Athletic DirectorDirectly supervises or designates an adult supervisor of all dressing rooms and locks up equipment at the close of each practice or contestAccompanies and directs the varsity team and assistant coaches in all interscholastic activities at home and awaySupervises team and insures proper conduct and discipline enroute to and at away from home contestsRequires that on all trips, team members dress in a manner becoming to themselves as individuals and as representatives of Hardin SchoolsEND OF SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:Arranges for cleaning, storing and conducting an inventory of all equipmentEvaluates past seasonArranges for the systematic return of all school equipment and holds the athlete responsible for all equipment not returnedRecommends student athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic letters, certificates or special awardsRecommends additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilitiesMakes written recommendations to the Athletic Director personnel for assistant coaching positionsSubmits recommendations for schedule for next yearSelects equipment and makes recommendations for purchase of same.Maintains records of team and individual accomplishments.DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:Meets MHSA requirements and passed coaching certification courseworkSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:Exhibit qualities of leadership and organization ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administrationAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manualsAbility to follow both oral and written directions and instructions of the athletic directorAbility to effectively manage time and responsibilitiesAbility to write routine reports and correspondenceAbility to handle stressful situationsAbility to maintain confidentiality of employee and student mattersAbility to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policiesEQUIPMENT USED:Stopwatch, calculator, computer, copier, fax, audio visual equipment, telephone/voice mail, score-keeping equipment or other equipment germane to the sport/activitySUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Assistant CoachesStudentsWORK ENVIRONMENT:While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand.
