This role is a unique opportunity to build a new underwriting capability from the ground up.The Director, Underwriting (Medical) will establish and scale Athene's Rated Age underwriting function, creating the strategy, frameworks, and operational foundation to support long-term growth. This is a builder role, ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly, and wants to shape a function that will become a critical differentiator for Athene in a competitive market.Accountabilities:Design and implement Athene's Rated Age underwriting strategy, operating model, and governance frameworkTranslate business objectives into scalable underwriting processes, tools, and system requirementsDevelop and maintain underwriting guidelines and manuals to ensure consistency, quality, and risk alignmentPartner cross-functionally (Legal, Compliance, Risk, IT, Operations) to operationalize underwriting capabilitiesEstablish performance metrics, workflows, and continuous improvement initiatives to scale efficientlyAct as a strategic advisor to leadership on underwriting risk, capabilities, and growth opportunitiesQualifications and Experience:7+ years of relevant experience in insurance underwriting, medical underwriting, structured settlements, or related financial services4+ years of relevant experience providing leadership (direct or indirect), including building or scaling new capabilities or processesDemonstrated experience in medical underwriting, mortality assessment, or Rated Age underwriting (preferred, not required)Proven ability to translate business needs into underwriting frameworks, processes, and operational executionBachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experienceWhy this role at Athene?Build from zero to scale: Own and shape a brand-new underwriting capability with enterprise visibility and impactGrowth trajectory: Be part of a business expanding into new markets like Structured Settlements with strong leadership supportCulture that moves: Athene operates with a bias for action, encouraging innovation, fast learning, and continuous improvementCareer acceleration: Opportunity to grow into a formal people leader role as the function scalesDrive.
