Spokane, WA | Full-Time | $50,000 - $60,000/yrAbout the RoleAn independent, community NPR-affiliate public radio station serving 1.25 million people across 20,000 square miles of the Inland Northwest is hiring a reporter to join its award-winning newsroom. The coverage area includes Spokane and a rich mix of rural communities across eastern Washington and northern Idaho.The reporter files stories for daily newscasts, contributes features and interviews for local slots within NPR news magazines, and helps produce content for the station's daily podcast, public affairs program, and website. Stories are shared with the Northwest News Network and NPR News. The role also includes occasional hosting duties and peer editing responsibilities within a small, energetic newsroom.What the Role CoversWorking with the news director and managing editor to coordinate coverageFiling short regional stories for daily newscasts and occasional feature stories and interviews for local programmingWriting, editing, and posting web versions of local storiesHelping compile material for the station's daily news podcastSharing peer editing responsibilities with newsroom colleaguesCoordinating coverage with public radio partners in the NorthwestSubstituting as local host of All Things Considered and Weekend EditionParticipating in semi-annual pledge drives and serving as a station ambassador in on-air and in-person rolesCoordinating with staff on fundraising, marketing, and visibility effortsCovering breaking news, extreme weather events, political forums, and other planned events as neededQualificationsOne to five years of experience in journalism or a related fieldExperience producing and voicing audio for radioStrong written and editorial skillsProficiency in digital editing software such as Adobe Audition or HindenburgKnowledge of and adherence to journalistic ethicsStrong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and work independentlyAbility to work collaboratively and communicate effectivelyPreferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, experience as an on-air host, familiarity with public radio, and knowledge of digital platforms and social media best practices. Reliable transportation is preferred.Schedule is 40 hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or evening shifts. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; sick time; up to 96 hours of vacation accrual (increasing after 18 months); two personal days; and nine paid holidays per year.
