Substitute Teacher

Current qualifications may include 60 hours of college coursework or an associate's degree. Starting July 1, 2026, all substitutes will be required to complete the Strategies and Practices for Substitute Teacher Success online course (no charge) on the New Mexico Public Education Department website before applying for a license. A Superintendent verification form must be attached to the PED license application. Licensure Qualifications:Substitute Teacher NMPED License ($50 for intitial License + $59 for initial background check through NMPED)ORCurrent Teaching License with any endorsementA substitute must:- be 18 years of age to work in grades K-8 and 21 years of age to work in grades 9-12.- have a High School DiplomaThe Assistant Superintendent will meet by appointment with each applicant to evaluate experience and qualifications for approval.
