Position Type:Paraprofessional - Campus/InterpreterDate Posted:4/23/2026Location:North Mesquite High SchoolInstructional Support Compensation PlanSalary Range: Mesquite ISD - Compensation PlansShift Type: Full-TimeWage/Hour Status: Non-ExemptReports To: PrincipalEMPLOYMENT BEGINS: As soon as possiblePRIMARY PURPOSE:To function in the role of interpreter for deaf students in assigned classes, and/or as an instructional aide in assigned deaf education classes as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Certification:High School Diploma/GEDCollege classes in American Sign Language or comparable experience utilizing American Sign Language as a communication modeInterpreter certification from the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - Board for Evaluation of Interpreters at Level I or aboveSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:Interpret fluently in Signed English and/or AmericanSign LanguageReverse interpret fluently in a variety of situationsImplement the Code of Ethics for InterpretersEXPERIENCE:None required beyond certification by the Board for Evaluation of InterpretersMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Be on time to class and stay for the entire class periodInterpret teacher presentations and or lecturesInterpret/voice classroom interactionsInterpret films and video presentations and assembliesDetermine seating arrangements in order for the students to be able to see the teacher, interpreter, overhead and chalkboardFamiliarize self with class content including technical sign vocabulary specific to each class. Request textbooks and handouts in advance when possibleClarify points for the students without assuming the teacher's roleRepeat instructions only when needed; not routinelyRefer student questions about the lesson to the teacherEncourage deaf students to participate in class discussionsAvoid needless conversations with the studentsInterpret student interaction with other students, teachers andadministrators in non classroom situationsInstruct students as directed by the teacherRely on the teacher to monitor classroom behaviorAttend district, regional and state staff development to enhance and improve sign language skillsPerform other duties as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NoneWORKING CONDITIONS:Mental Demands:Showing flexibility in a variety of situations or various circumstancesCommunicating with administrators, teachers and studentsconcerning campus and classroom modifications for deaf studentsFunctioning as a team member in the education of deaf studentsPhysical demands/environmental factors:Repetitive hand motions to formulate signs
