Director, Grants Office
Position Summary
This professional position has overall strategic and operational responsibility for maximizing non-research grant funding for the MaineHealth (MH) system, through collaboration with MH local hospitals (LHS) and affiliates, clinical service line leaders, planning and population health program staff, and others. Under the supervision and guidance of the Chief Health Improvement Officer, the Director will facilitate the identification and strategic prioritization of proposal ideas; identify and publicize funding opportunities; lead teams in the development and submission of grant proposals; and oversee the use of best practices in project development, management and recordkeeping.
The Director works with MH leadership and teams to identify and respond to strategic priorities at both the system and the LHS levels; identifies and monitors the priorities of potential funding sources; analyzes funding opportunities and makes recommendations to relevant MH staff system-wide. In addition, the Director creates and maintains relationships with funder staff, potential research partners and other collaborators.
The Director provides expertise and technical assistance on all phases of concept and proposal development, including:
background research, conceptualization of initiatives, and drafting and editing of concept papers,
identification of strategic partners and potential funders,
management of proposal writing teams,
development of complex budgets and budget justifications,
development of logic models, work plans, evaluation plans and other proposal components,
drafting and editing of proposals, and oversight of the proposal production process,
oversight of Grants Office staff and consultants.
The Director oversees the development and management of MH’s non-research grant portfolio, including oversight of staff responsible for tracking of pre-award proposals and post-award non-research grants. In addition, the Director provides technical assistance to MH staff system-wide regarding grant reporting, and general writing and editing.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Education: Bachelor’s or higher degree in appropriate fields (e.g., journalism, English, health policy).
License/Certifications: N/A
Experience: Three to five years progressive experience leading and supervising grant writing in a health or health-related field, with demonstrated ability to secure large grants and/or contracts (over $100,000) from varied sources. Knowledge and experience in accessing, critiquing and summarizing information about health and healthcare (e.g., using published research, grey literature, databases). Knowledge of and experience in all aspects of proposal development, writing, and production. A demonstrated leadership, coaching and relationship management experience, and ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals and groups in developing and producing proposals.
Knowledge of public health and healthcare delivery systems, and current issues and trends
Knowledge of funders at the state and national levels, including foundations and government agencies
Knowledge of complex budgeting and cost allocation methodologies for non-research projects
Ability to develop, or facilitate the development of, the conceptual framework for a proposal
Ability to access – and assist others in accessing – information on potential sources of funding
Ability to initiate and maintain institutional registrations and privileges, and successfully use online submission and reporting systems (e.g., grants.gov, HRSA EHB, eRA Commons)
Ability to plan and deliver training sessions for diverse audiences on all aspects of grant writing
