SummaryThis position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) - Ambulance Service - in one of the various VA Medical Center (VAMC) locations - with an emergency room - acute care or urgent care clinic - or other similar departments performing basic life support procedures.QualificationsTo qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 04/27/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation - but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year - it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade - as required by the announcement. In this instance - you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.Basic RequirementsSpecialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists - that is directly related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge - skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Medical Care Transportation Technician - assesses severity of illness/injury and identifies life threatening problemsDetermines/prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistanceEMTs shall perform patient triage - take and records patient's vital signs as neededPerforms physical examinations and obtains patient history - assesses status of patient's neurological system - cardiovascular system - circulatory system - skeletal system - orthopedic system - motor and sensory skills - and level of consciousnessAdministers basic life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards - which may include providing CPR - and/or drug treatmentsPerforms invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditionsOperates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment - tools and supplies which may include ambulance - extrication tools - blood pressure cuff - AED - glucose monitor - oxygen terminal - pulse oximetry monitor - medical supplies - radio communications equipment - and general office equipmentProvides treatment as prescribed in protocolMakes modifications to the protocol - if necessary - within prescribed limitsWhen not responding to Emergency Response Team calls - the incumbent may serve in a technical support capacity to the Emergency DepartmentSelects the most efficient route to and from sites - taking into consideration traffic patterns - health facility locations - etcEMTs operate emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systemsAdheres to traffic ordinances and regulations pertaining to operation of emergency vehiclesEMTs prepare appropriate patient and vehicle use documentation and reports to ensure medical requirements are metProvides a thorough safety inspection and operator maintenance (e.g. - monitoring fluid levels - replacing air filters and interior lights - checking tire pressure - etc.)Responsible for taking patients to and from medical areasAssists in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facilityDriving is required for this job Performs other duties as assignedWork Schedule: EMTs work rotating shifts -
